aol shuts down it's listserv operations.

This from another mailing list I subscribe to. Since Clayart is run on a
listserv I thought this might be of interest.

There is a link at the bottom to the full article if anyone is interested.

"Ending a service it has offered for well over a decade, AOL is
shutting down its free LISTSERV-based mailing-list hosting
operations...."

Why we continue the list rather than move to a forum:

"Mailing lists still can provide a unique service for public
discourse, said L-Soft's Eric Thomas, the creator of the LISTSERV
software. With mailing lists, users are not limited by any specific
character count, and they can add attachments to their missives,
Thomas said. People's dispatches are easier to find than with
Facebook's newsfeed, where they can be buried under posts of other
topics."

For what its worth , with the chinapainting group that I run, PPIO
( Porcelain Painters International Online) , we do both ... a
listserv and a forum . They work hand in hand .
We got away from free listservs years ago because , in our case,
the one that we had was totally unreliable . We have been with
lfchosting ( I pay a monthly fee) for many years now and its been great .
A couple of Novembers ago , I also set up www.PPIOforum.com to
work alongside thelist. .. so we are able to discuss things on the
list ( Like Clayart does ) but then , we are able to post pictures ,
lessons, video etc and carry on more discussion on the forum . The
forum is set up so that the information stays in place and is easy to sear=
ch .
A stand alone forum doesnt work as well because , like Facebook,
discussions get broken up into subjects... and while that seems like
a great idea, reading through all of the posts on clayart has caused
me to learn many things I never knew I wanted or needed to know. Its
also helped me get to know all of you and feel like Im part of the family.
A stand alone listserv also doesnt work quite as well because ,
with Clayart also being very visual , its great to be able to see
what we're talking about... and having a central place for
pictures etc, instead of getting links to individual
websites, makes things easier to find in the future.... a visual archive.
