peter pugger vpm-9 and b-mix ss?

I am looking at purchasing a Peter Pugger VPM-9. I throw B-Mix most of the
time, and Rod's Bod on occasion. I might choose to do some porcelain later
on down the road. Have about $1000 worth of recycled clay scraps saved up,
so I am ready to offset the cost of the machine with the cost savings on th=
e
clay.

I have read through the archives, and studied the options, but I still have
a couple of questions -

Is the $800 stainless steel package necessary for B-mix? Or just porcelain=
?
And if for porcelain, if I clean the equipment immediately after pugging
porcelain, will the standard model be all right (no corrosion)?

I was told once that B-Mix does not do well in a Peter Pugger, that it gets
too dense. Not sure that would be the Pugger, or the equipment operator
that made that happen.

Any advice and actual experience would be greatly appreciated.

Stainless steel is the only material that makes sense in a
pug mill.
Aluminum is a false economy since the machine will last
practically
forever in stainless without pitting or creating reactive
lumps and
bits that aluminum does.

Robin

I have a Peter Pugger, have only had it for about a year, but I put
B-mix into it and don't find it gets too "dense, "
whatever exactly that means. However, I pug a variety of white clays in
it so the b-mix gets mixed with other
stoneware clays and what I end up with is a nice white slightly groggy
stoneware.

The one problem I have had that I am a bit mystified about is sometimes
the clay comes out full of little bubbles.
I think that happens when the clay is too wet or when I fill the hopper
too full or when I mix too long, but I'm
really not sure which.

Thank you all for your advice and information, I am ordering my new
stainless steel Peter Pugger this week.

I just needed to confirm my thoughts with Clayarters that have used one in
the real world.

I was considering the stainless option because I only intend to buy this
piece of equipment one time, and it only takes a few pieces ruined from
flakes to pay for the upgrade. Let alone the sealed clay compartment so
that I can leave clay in it.

Once again, thank you!
