raku & fire clay

I want to try some naked raku process here and many
formulas indicate the use of fireclay. Is # 6 Tile Clay a fireclay?
AP Green, ball clays? what do I use. We don't have Lincoln fireclay
here either. Thanks

AP Green is the fireclay in your list.
I have found it is important not to fire the pots over 1500F for naked raku=
.

Greetings Brother Kouba,

#6 Tile is a variant of kaolin and not a fire clay. There was an article i=
n
the September/October 2011 Pottery Making Illustrated by Kate and Will
Jacobson where they describe some of their naked raku techniques. They sai=
d
that they use their raku clay body as the slip resist layer with good
results. The idea is that they bisque fire the pot, so it has already had
shrinkage. During the drying and firing of the slip resist layer (and glaz=
e
layer too if you are using the 2 step process) the slip layer will shrink
and form the cracks that lets the smoke through to the pot body. If I recal=
l
correctly, the two clay bodies mentioned were Laguna's WC-843 Soldate 60 an=
d
WC-370 Armador; both are Cone 10 clays and available on the West Coast. I
have used the Soldate 60 for raku, and it is a fine body for the
application. I have not yet tried it as a slip layer for naked raku, but
plan to soon. Too much going on with Fall show season upon us.

Below is a recipe for slip and retaining glaze for a 2 step process that
doesn't have fire clay and is used successfully at a public arts center in
Georgia. These are applied to burnished, or terra sigillata covered, and
bisque fired pots. You may already have the ingredients on hand. You might
also be able to sub the EPK with Tile 6 if you have that on hand, but I
would test small scale before committing to regular work.

Is this going to be fired in the Incinerator "kiln"?

Hi Llewellyn=3D2C

It's no big deal which you use for this purpose.

One of my students (bless her heart)used our standard studio kiln wash by m=

and the results for Naked Raku were spectacular.

Kiln Wash (John Britt)

25% calcined EPk or other Kaolin----------you can calcine it yourself by lo=

full of EPK into a bisque firing.=

25% EPK (uncalcined because you need the plasticity) EPK stands for "Edga=

50% Alumina Hydrate

Add 1.5% G-200 feldspar (Custer feldspar works well also)

Don't be intimidated by published recipes. Too often these are accepted as =

then have the courage (or stupidity) to try it. Or...recognize the potenti=

I'm sure as I write that someone else will tell you the difference=3D20
between ball clays=3D2C fire clays=3D2C and kaolins so I'm going to=3D20
