standing while throwing

the problem with throwing while standing is the foot pedal.
most of one's weight is on one foot.
I prefer standing, so I mounted the pedal on the side of the
wheel, bolted on an extension so I control the speed by
sleight pressure on the extension arm. by adding a compression
spring the pedal functions like a car's accelerator. in addition, I
mounted a board at hip height to lean against (or not) as my weight
shifted for comfort. this on an axner wheel, but I've put them on
pacificas and brents as well.

Remembering my mother used her knee to operate her sewing machine, I wanted
to figure out how to do that with my stand-up wheel. My clever, resourcefu=
l
husband came up with the device shown on our website: www.stonecherubs.org
My weight is evenly distributed and I don't have to stop throwing to
activate the pedal.

My Chiropractor says that standing is better for your back because it all=

ows=3D20
your legs to absorb some of the pressure that would end at your lower bac=

k.

I stand on a thick rubber matt that is raised to the level of my foot ped=

dle set=3D20
at full speed, so I am not tilted to far to the left when I reach my foot=
=3D
over to=3D20
adjust the speed. The foot peddle is tightened so I don't have to stand =
=3D
on the=3D20
peddle. I tend to shift my balance to my left foot when I lift my right =
=3D
foot to=3D20
change the speed, and then shift back to put more weight on the right. I=

use=3D20
the gear shift on Shimpo RK model wheels when they're in front of me.

I have worked with potters that set their Brent foot peddles up on a shel=

to the wheels splash pan, and adjust the speed with their hand.

I forgot to mention the pedal fix for my wheel. Mr. Lou ain't kidding
about foot pedals being a problem for us stand-uppers.

Here is a link to the picture I could find showing (somewhat) the
speed control lever I attached to my pedal with c-clamps (or G-clamps
if you English).
