I had cc'd this to clayart, but got a failure notice. Not sure why so sendi=

Subject: Clarification: Candle in electric kiln?

Here's the regimen I used for student bisques when I was teaching:

Ware should feel dry

bottom peep OUT, top peep OUT, door AJAR 2 inches
all switches on LOW

hold for 2 hrs

bottom peep IN, top peep OUT, door AJAR 2 inches
all switches on LOW

hold for 1 hr

bottom peep IN, top peep OUT, door CLOSED
all switches on LOW
hold for 1/2 hr

bottom peep IN, top peep OUT, door CLOSED
all switches on MED
hold for 1/2 hr

bottom peep IN, top peep OUT, door CLOSED
all switches on HIGH

Note that the top peep remains out for the entire firing. The all switches =
to MED step can be eliminated; I kept it in because it maintained a sort of=
rhythm that I find pleasing... -Rimas

Rimas

Notice that you never put a plug in top peephole. This is what my kiln
manuals all recommend but in my experience you get a more even and faster
firing putting the top peephole plug in. Been doing it for 30 years and al=
l
my kilns with no problems.

Maybe Arnold or some expert could explain.

When I was teaching we primarily used the electric for bisquing and leaving=
=3D
the plug out just provided a larger hole for organics and chemical water v=
=3D
apor to escape. In my work I use a lot of wax and the open peep allowed the=
=3D
burning wax to get out. The stoneware that we were using was 1/3 Goldart t=
=3D
hat gave off a lot of sulfur. The procedure was to load the bisque and only=
=3D
go to the kiln room to make an adjustment, most of the gaseous effluent wa=

=3D
e sulfur and burning wax fumes to get out; the kiln room did have an exhaus=

t system but it was not sufficient to keep the air clear... For the undergl=
=3D
aze unit we fired to 05 after burning the sulfur residue out of the kiln. I=
=3D
never saw any appreciable difference in results from top to bottom... The =
=3D
electrics in my studio are computerized and vented so the plug stays in and=
=3D
the difference from top to bottom, for my purposes, is negligible.
For a bisque, I ramp 180 to 180 hold for 2 hrs and then ramp 500 to 1900..=
