Hello....

Can anyone suggest galleries or museums that specialize in contemporary
clay in NYC?

Either functional or non is OK.

Thanks in advance, Chrsi

Can anyone recommend some good places to see ceramics in NYC? I'm primarily interested in functional pots, but would love to see any gallery that showcases clay.

Thanks!

scott,

the best place is the metropolitan museum. around 80th st and 5th ave.
islamic and chinese collections are especially extensive. for contemporary
thrown tableware, i know only john elder gallery in chelsea. depends on what
is showing when you go. think its around west 24th st and 10th ave. garth
clark gallery on west 57th is the best-known. no functional ware shown. has
an interesting selection of books for sale. and a website
http://www.garthclark.com . in the same building as garth clark there was a
gallery which shows high-end japanese pots, but was in the process of moving
to another location when i visited. sorry don't remember its name. if you go
to garth clark ask where it moved to. go to just about any gallery and you
will find a free gallery guide, which will have exact addresses for these
places. when i was there recently, i passed a japanese craft store that
looked interesting, but was closed. i think it was east 60th or 61st between
park and lex. i met the studio manager of greenwich house pottery, who said
there isn't much handmade functional pottery on display in manhattan. there
is also a gallery in the greenwich house building, at 16 jones st between
bleeker and west 4th sts, open afternoons. i suggest you devote most of your
time to the met, rather than running around looking for the odd bit here and
there. you could spend days at the museum just looking at pots.

best, brian

The Brooklyn Museum also has an extensive collection of pottery.

Went to the Metropolitan Museum a couple months ago, incredible. The gallery
I always visit in NYC is Garth Clark - check CM to see what the show is going
to be.

Enjoy the city,

Barbara
