Hi James=3D2C Greetings All=3D2C

just one addition: If one places a properly fitting plastic=3D2C rubber=3D=

r metal "grommet"(sleeve) over the batt pin heads to be imbedded in the pla=
=3D
ster when poured=3D2C it greatly increases the life of the batt pin holes i=
n =3D
the plaster.=3DA0=3DA0=3DA0=3D20

Example: An inexpensive 9mm X 0ne fourth inch drive socket made in Taiwan i=
=3D
s a perfect fit. Try other 9mm objects.=3DA0 A variety of rubber and plasti=

hoses and automotive=3D2C air and plumbing fittings are also good prospects=

I have Automatic clothes washer hoses that are a perfect snug fit.=3DA0=3DA=

small nail driven thru the rubber=3D2C in perpendicular=3D2C makes a good a=

Personally I don't like plaster for everyday throwing=3D3B but for batts de=
st=3D
ined for large thrown=3D2C and combination thrown/hand built forms I trim a=
b=3D
it of a gently sloping centered convex form into the freshly setting plaste=
=3D
r. In reversed order=3D2C this gives the center of the clay vessel bottom a=
s=3D
lightly concave form for standing stability. (plaster has a window of trim=
=3D
ming opportunity during set up.) Do this away from clay work area!!!!!!!!!

For those interested=3D3B research Jigger/jolly methods to find other possi=

e forms your adapted bats can help you create/duplicate.

And don't be afraid of being wrong about something=3D2C losing face=3D2C ge=

If one's mind is really open=3D2C even the "dumbest" question and "stupides=

life in the clay arts.

=3DA0Good Morning Everyone=3D2C

=3DA0Vince=3D2C requested that I post my instructions on making your own pl=
aste=3D
r
=3DA0bats=3D2C here on the list.

=3DA0The following are the instructions that I gave Elaine.

=3DA0If you are not using your Bat pins=3D2C you will need to install them.

=3DA0Here is a list of things that you will need to make your own plaster b=
at=3D
s.

=3DA01. Flexible metal ribbon=3D2C enough to encircle you wheel head one an=
d 1/=3D
2
=3DA0times=3D2C and the thickness of the bat that you wish to make.

=3DA02. You need a tie down strip=3D2C so that you can tighten it around th=
e
=3DA0metal ribbon.

=3DA03. Plaster=3D2C I would suggest Hydrocal white plaster=3D2C since is t=
he str=3D
ongest.

=3DA04. A little modeling clay.

=3DA05. Murphy's Oil Soap=3D2C this is used as a releasing agent.

=3DA0The thickness of the bat depends on how thick you want then=3D2C I wou=
ld s=3D
uggest
=3DA0that you make your bats=3D2C at least one to one and 1/2 inches thick.=
The=3D
metal
=3DA0ribbon should be wide enough to reach the bottom of the wheel head and=
t=3D
he
=3DA0thickness of the plaster bat. Secure the metal ribbon with the strippi=
ng=3D
=3D2C by
=3DA0tighten the stripping around the base of the wheel head. On the inside=
o=3D
f
=3DA0the metal ribbon and the wheel head=3D2C run a small clay bead to seal=
the
=3DA0inside=3D2C so that the plaster will not leak out=3D2C this also helps=
you t=3D
o remove
=3DA0the bat from the wheel head. After you have prepared the wheel head fo=
r =3D
the
=3DA0plaster=3D2C brush a thin cost of the oil soap=3D2C or a releasing age=
nt tha=3D
t you
=3DA0prefer. Mix the Hydrocal to the directions and then pour it in slowly=
=3D2C=3D
so
=3DA0that you do not get any bubbles or cavities in the bat. Oh=3D2C make s=
ure =3D
that
=3DA0you coat the bat pins with the releasing agent=3D2C since you want the=
m to=3D
be
=3DA0perfect. Oh=3D2C I almost forgot=3D2C you want to make sure that you m=
achine=3D
is
=3DA0completely level. I did forget to tell you to use a smooth sided stick=
t=3D
o
=3DA0level the plaster in the mold.

=3DA0The rest is easy=3D2C let the plaster cure=3D2C remove the stripping a=
nd let=3D
the
=3DA0outside of the bat cure.

=3DA0I hope that you find these instructions helpful.
