My brain is old and I am tired, but I hear an echo from the past.....

" To fire a kiln you have to learn to wait. If the kiln's not
doing what you want it to do, you must wait until it does. Somehow it
knows how to fire itself. You have only to wait, and watch, and do
what needs to be done.

You can't push the river, either.

I know, I've tried.

Karin:
Yes, you _can_ push the river.
But not far...and it always pushes back.
Trust me on this.

You DID see the attribution to an "unknown Shigaraki potter" at the
end of that quote,
que no, Steve????? I didn't make it up...it was a quote told to me
and other claymates by
the late Peter von Wilken Zook in Mendocino....at a wood fire which
'appeared' to be stalling. It turned out to be a beautiful fire. What
a lot of work. (not an easy language)

You are spot on Karin. For the end, you really need to be sure you
have more wood than you need. You need to have extra help at the
end. For a long firing, having enough people to fire 3 shifts is
ideal.

Dear Karin

I most certainly did see it!=3D20

Along with several other similar "Mantras" (including the one I quoted), i=
t=3D
is trotted out on a regular basis to would-be wood firers of the "I want i=
t=3D
now" variety who cannot (or don't to) understand that there are things in =
l=3D
ife we HAVE to wait for and are WORTH waiting for!

Take care

P.S.=3D20
This last weekend a former student fired a rather difficult Kiln (he design=
e=3D
d) for the third time.=3D20
The preceding firings had been of the 38 hour variety and rather underfired=
.=3D
=3D20
This time we exceeded 48 hours and he was miserably expecting the worst.=3D=
20

We unpacked on Wednesday, and the results were considerably better.=3D20
So two things are going to happen: a partial re-configuration of the inside=
,=3D
and a 56 hour firing.=3D20
THEN we'll party!
