Does anyone have an Amaco No. 1 pottery wheel? I have a chance to get a
working one for $75. I'd like to hear feedback from those who've thrown
on it before I make the plunge.

thanks

Its one of the two speed models (95 rpm, 65 rpm) with a 1/3 HP motor.
Its got a built in seat and a gear driven motor -- no belts. I have no
idea if it growls or not. I have not driven the 70 miles round trip to
check it out.

Learned to throw on an old (two speed) No 1 wheel....in 1967.

Speeds are slow and slower.

Maybe a good learners wheel or for someone who trims very slowly?

I have one of these to throw outdoors. A quirky wheel compared to a Shimp=
=3D
o=3D20
etc. Great splash pan design and integrated seat. I use the slow speed to=
=3D
throw=3D20
looser forms. So it would be an interesting secondary wheel @75 bucks.

DJ!.
The Amaco #1 wheel used to be the nation's most preferred potter's
wheel to LEARN throwing on. Only having two speeds , "high" to center
"low" for everything else, it was the wheel that generations learned
on. It's limitations are that one can only throw about 18" high and
18" wide. By the time a potter can do that, it's time to move on to a
variable speed wheel... $ 75.00 you say? SNAP IT UP! If nothing else
it makes for a great trimming wheel!

DJ -
It's a lot of heavy-duty machinery for $75, and they are practically
indestructible, but the reality is that it is not a very good wheel at all.
I would not pay $75 for one, and if you are serious about throwing and you
buy this wheel, you will immediately be scheming on how to get a better one=
.
Probably better to start off with a good wheel, especially considering some
of the bargain priced ones that are really quite fine.

DJ,

A long time friend gave me this same wheel decades ago.=3DA0 It reads like =

My boyfriend way back when took the wheel head, switch, motor and foot peda=

ame and seat.=3DA0 There was some sort of electrical problem and we went to=

n electronics store, explained the situation (foot pedal??? memory sketchy)=
=3D
, they sold us an inexpensive (maybe $10) something or other, my boyfriend =
=3D
installed the part and it worked.

It is my all time favorite trimming wheel of the three I have.=3DA0 I keep =
a =3D
Giffen Grip atop it.=3DA0 My other two wheels are both Brents - one purchas=

new, the other used.

Consider customizing another frame for it.=3D20
If memory serves (this was like 1988), the seat and height were not ergonom=
