feeling heat-wilty...how bow chew?

I hear there are 'Heat waves' going on in various areas of the Country.

Here of course, it tends to get fairly hot every Summer, and, so far, =3D
this Summer seems no exception.

I did about fourty hours of Work on my old sat-for-years and was =3D
neglected before that Step Van No. 2, out in the Sunshine, on the =3D
Asphalt and Gravel of the Parking Lot here.

All went well, got a lot done on it, on the Road now pending the =3D
Registration rituals.

I have to admit I have been feeling somewhat wilty lately with the Heat =3D
at times.

The only Cooling here anymore is one very small Swamp Cooler in the =3D
front Room Transom for the pre-release and non-release-able Birds, so =3D
they can have some comfort, so, been sleeping out there with them.

Little Birds ( and one Bantam Hen ) sleeping next to my Ribs, next to my =
=3D
Head, roosting on my Ankels and Knees...but I learned long ago how to =3D
sleep that way, where I never move an inch the whole time, for fear of =3D
mashing them when they nestle like that...so one tends to wake up a =3D
little crampy/achey from the same position being held so long.

Otherwise, in the Workshop, it is a little oppressive.

Friends who are young and athletic and in good shape, seem able to stand =
=3D
it for about ten minutes before becoming visably woosey and pale/pasty =3D
and having to use a hand on a chair back or other to steady themselves.

I am in this 24/7, this or Working out Doors, but for the occasional =3D
naps with the Birds where it is only maybe 95 or so.

Some days I do fine, energetic and productive...other days, I feel =3D
worthless and just want to nap..which means laying there on a Cot, =3D
Like-a-Starfish, and sweating, but, at at least it is a lot cooler in =3D
there with the Birds, where, at I am asleep for a while and maybe even =3D
dreaming about other, possibly more comfortable conditions...Lol...

Drink a Gallon and a Half of Water/Liquids/Juices a-day, and still not =3D
pee even half a Teacup worth in 24 hours...

How 'bout you?

How goes the Heat Wave or Summer Heat stuff where-ever you are?

I sure miss the BIG Roof Mount Swamp Coolers I used to have for the =3D
Shop...used to be two of them, muffled rumbling along, hitting harmonics =
=3D
every minute or two where the whole Building would vibrate and shudder, =3D
keeping things nice and "Cool" in here...at their best you needed a long =
=3D
sleeve Flannel Shirt to stay warm enough...Lol...but gone now, and so it =
=3D
goes.

Slowly preparing to Move, so the last few years all the amenities have =3D
gone, the old circa 1962 Roof Mount Swamp coolers finally too rotted and =
=3D
frail to bother trying to maintain, and, so they got tossed...emptied =3D
out my Appartment, and Office, all the furniture and so on gone. Just =3D
the Shop, and the Birds in the front room, and a Cot and a little Hot =3D
Plate and a small Refrigerator now and no mood to put big dough into =3D
anything about the Building, which is not mine...so...abiding...

Ahhhh...Summer in Las Vegas...I always LOVED the Heat, but I will admit, =
=3D
it was easier to abide when I had some coolness to repair in now and =3D
then!

Lol...

Love,

Pffftt. Tomorrow's going to be 108 here in Wichita, KS. I think the high ha=
=3D
s been below 100 just one day in two weeks. We're already at triple the ave=
=3D
rage number of days in the hundreds.

You are welcome to come borrow as muc=3D
h heat as you can stand. I'd gladly ship some to you at my own expense if I=
=3D
just knew how.

Students at the studio ask how you know when a pot is bone=3D
dry. Well, there ain't no question about it now.

Here in =3D
Seattle, we'd like to borrow about 15 degrees of heat from
some of you guys=3D
. We had two days last week when the temperature got
above 80 for a little =3D
while. Before that, we has so far this year had
78 minutes of heat above 80=3D
! There's still cross country skiing in
Mt. Rainier National Park, and they=3D
probably will not open the road up
to Mt. Baker at all this year. They had=3D
90 feet of snow this year up
there. Today it's rainy here and probably wil=3D
l not get above 65. My
tomato plants have grown about 6" since I put them i=3D
n, a month late,
about June 1. I was backpacking last week and we had to fi=3D
nd
someplace to go that was far enough east of the Cascades and low
enough =3D
that we could get to it at all. We got to the cirque at the
end of the Enti=3D
at River, but there was 4 feet or so of snow in the
timber below it and it'=3D
s only 5500'. This is the coldest wettest
summer on record here.

The Ann Arbor Art Fair took place last week. I haven't done the show =3D
since 1995 but have lots of friends who do it and had an artist and his =3D
daughter staying with me. The heat was miserable. At least 98 and very =3D
high humidity. Made it impossible for the body to cool down. I do an art =
=3D
fair party for artists and friends on Tuesday before the fair. People =3D
come over after setting up and have dinner on us. Getting ready was =3D
really hard. My partner and I were moving on slow speed trying to get =3D
things ready for about 75 people. Three canopies to put up. Tables and =3D
chairs. And, everything else that goes with it. Monday night I was sick =3D
with heat exhaustion just from being in and out of the house getting =3D
ready. I was amazed that people showed up in that heat, but by six it =3D
was bearable and we had a great time. But, the next few days for =3D
artists were awful. The heat was dangerous. Thursday the thermometer hit =
=3D
101 with 80% humidity. The heat index was 115 and since this was a =3D
street fair it was even worse for exhibitors. Dangerous conditions but =3D
somehow people made it through. Rain on Friday and Saturday made =3D
everyone cheer. That fair has always handled rain, but heat just drives =3D
the people away. For me, last week was a lost week. Even with air in my =3D
studio it was just too oppressive to work. Just going from the studio to =
=3D
the house took your breath away.

I lived in south Texas for five years and the heat was as bad or worse, =3D
but somehow when it's happening in Michigan handling it is harder.

I was there too, and it sure was oppressive. Very few people were out on =
=3D
Thursday. But Friday I got news that took my mind off both the heat and =3D
selling: My hometown of Oslo, Norway, was bombed and 68 (? - the number =3D
has fluctuated) young people were shot down on an island nearby. It was =3D
so hard to sit in my booth and pay attention to customers when I all I =3D
wanted to do was find a TV or get to the Internet.
Fortunately for me, I soon found out that at least my family was fine, =3D
but what a long and lonely weekend it turned out to be. It's still =3D
occupying my mind 24/7, and it will take some time to recover, even for =3D
me, so far away.

I was at that art fair on Friday. It was me who brought the rain. Every
time I go to that fair, even if the weatherman says zero chance of rain, it
will pour! The crowds were extremely thin this year, and those folks who
were there were not carrying packages. A few people were carrying
art-on-a-stick, but no one I talked to was making any money. Last year the
crowds were quite heavy, but even then it was mostly lookers, and very few
buyers.

We looked for Richard Aerni, hoping to add another one of his incredible
pieces to our collection, but we could not find him this year. We used to
pick up a piece from Steven Hill each year, but he no longer shows there.
Bought a small yunomi-type vessel from JT Abernathy, shino glazed, with
orange and black enamel or overglaze or something. There were two other
larger pieces by other potters that we intended to pick up on our way back,
but when the deluge began we just headed straight for the shuttle bus and
went home, soaked to the skin.

There was a PhD weather person on the radio this morning. She said that
there is currently a "dome of high pressure" over the midwest, covering a
million square miles or some such. She said that this dome is preventing
cool air from the north from moving down and moderating our temperature as
it usually does, and to compound that problem, it has also caused strong
winds out of the southwest that are pulling their hot air into the dome. I=
n
short, we are currently in a barometric Easy Bake Oven, and the temperature
will not return to normal until the high pressure system dissipates.

Personally, I love this heat, but I do feel sorry for the "normal" folks!

All the best.
