Need more information about the burner - what brand/type?
Does it have the proper orifice size for firing with propane.
How high of pressure are you turning it up to?
May not need such high gas pressure.

Hello All,

I am using propane to fire a raku top hat kiln and am having trouble with t=
he
burner sputtering when I turn up the gas so the firing is taking too long.
Please help.

Thank you,

Hi Felicity,

I'm sure there are people out there that know way more about this than I
do, but perhaps your line is freezing. Are you drawing propane from two
tanks simultaneously? Also, if something is blocking the updraft through
the kiln (the shelves for example), or if you're getting frequent down
drafts from breezes, that may be affecting kiln performance as well.

Felicity...

Do you have the burner tip too deep into the kiln? That will cut down on
secondary air, and can lead to problems such as you describe. The burner
tip should be outside of the kiln, perhaps 3/4" or so.

Just a blind guess.

Good call James.
I keep the burner 2-3" away from the burner port.
