Smithsonian Pledges to Sell More American-Made Gifts=3D20

=3DC2=3DA0 BALTIMORE (March 10) -- Following a meeting with Sen. Bernie San=
ders=3D
(I-Vt.), officials at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., ple=
=3D
dged to seek more American suppliers for the merchandise sold in the gift s=
=3D
hops of its popular museums.=3D20

In addition, the officials announced that one gift shop in the National Mus=
=3D
eum of American History will exclusively carry merchandise manufactured in =
=3D
the United States.=3D20

Sen. Sanders had written a letter to the museum in January expressing his d=
=3D
isappointment in the lack of American-made products found in the souvenir s=
=3D
hops of the national institution. His letter was recently cited by ABC's Wo=
=3D
rld News with Diane Sawyer, during a week of high-profile news reports abou=
=3D
t products made in America.=3D20

Representatives of the fine craft industry responded with letters to ABC Ne=
=3D
ws, to Sen. Sanders and to the Smithsonian, urging them to recognize and pr=
=3D
omote the high-quality work of America's studio-based artisans.=3D20

ABC's World News then visited an AmericanStyle Preferred Gallery in Washing=
=3D
ton, D.C., Appalachian Spring, and interviewed its owner, David Brooks.=3D2=

Today, AmericanStyle publisher Wendy Rosen hailed the Smithsonian's announc=
