clay advice

Thanks everyone for the thoughts on clay. I have always thought
preparing clay better but the students go thru it so fast the clay
particles haven't had time to absorb the water even with added reclaim
to the mix. Pulling handles is next to an impossibility even for a
handle guy like me. So I like Mel's idea of buy, mix and reclaim.
Storing a couple of tons in advance would be ideal but I don't see
getting them to make clay for the students of next year. We don't have
work study students to make the clay so it often means two or three
hours of each of my classes 3 or 4 students are mixing, pugging or
bagging. Frankly, I get paid too much to be a clay supervisor. I would
also like the students to take advantage of my creative skills while
they have me.
We put clay thru a Peter Pugger one day in class and it was amazing
for pullling handles (my criteria). I am now looking at the new
Shimpo/Mixer as it is stainless, cheaper and handles more clay in the
mixer. There is torque control that figures out the hardness/softness
of your clay.
Thanks everyone. I want the clay to be the best. It is after all the
very thing we make our work from and rarely discussed.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony=3D3B I just had a thought=3D2C since you are so close to Pottery S=
uppl=3D
y House=3D2C right there in Oakville. If you order pre-mix from them=3D2C =
mayb=3D
e you could work it out so different students go there and assist when you =
=3D
need a supply of fresh clay=3D2C another learning experience.
Cheers=3D2C Birgit Wright.
