shipping - who pays?

updated tue 31 may 11

Keba Hitzeman on fri 27 may 11

I've always been told that the only dumb question is the one not asked, so
I'll test that theory now!

When shipping to a business (not a gallery), what is the protocol for who
pays the shipping fees? She would be buying my pieces to resell in her yarn
shop.

Thanks!

My rule has always been that if someone is buying my work wholesale, she
pays the shipping, and if it is consignment, I do. I'm interested in what
others do about this!

Hi Keba,

Unless there is an agreement prior to the sale, about the seller paying for
the Shipping...I think it would be tacit, that the Buyer would pay for the
shipping of what they have bought.

Folks:
Having been on both sides of this fence, please allow me a moment of
definition that may yield some clarity.

If you are the producer, and you sell outright to a person, they can be
considered the "end-user" and should pay the shipping usually as a
separate fee.
However, if (again) you are the producer, but are sending the work to a
gallery or other store, or selling at a location not your own on
consignment;
the gallery or location should be considered YOUR AGENT and you would
not have them pay the shipping to sell your stuff for you. In that case
you would build (bundle, as an average) the cost of the shipping into
the sales price of the work (if you determine the retail price) or in to
the wholesale price if it is the gallery/store/consignment location that
determines the retail price.

Someone doing you a "favor" (even if they're doing it for a profit) by
selling YOUR work should not be penalized by paying shipping, unless
they understand and agree in advance to pass that cost along to the
consumer.

That all having been said, there are always exceptions.
To generate additional sales in a market flooded with incense burners
(if you sell incense burners, for example) you might want to forgo
shipping charges (Free shipping!!) in order to make YOUR product more
attractive. The same goes if you are just starting out, and wish to add
an "inducement" for people to purchase YOUR items instead of someone elses.

That's how it works in business. Look at any website or catalog these
days. Free shipping abounds in the offers. It's another marketing tool.

Best,
Wayne Seidl

She does. The best thing is research shippers depending where you are shipp=
ing to. For me, lower 48 I mainly use Fed Ex. Alaska I've used Parcel Post =
from USPS.

Some of the places I have shipped (from Japan and the USA) are not
exactly customers, but Clay Centers and non-profit shops and galleries
where the work is on consignment. Things always sold at NCC, but
at other places, I pay shipping to and they pay shipping on return, if
the work doesn't sell.

Pardon a slight sidetrack on the subject but it is related....I ship just
about everywhere via USPS on PayPal. It gives you a tracking number for
domestic shipments, so I can check to make sure the order gets to where it
belongs. A few week ago I sent an order to Colorado. I noted that it was
delivered in about three days, about what I would expect. Then just a coupl=
e
of days ago the customer contacted me to say she had just received it,
about 3 weeks late. Huh? how can that be when the tracker said it had been
delivered the 3rd of May? She said the package was marked "Re-send" to her
address. Looks like it was delivered to the wrong address and eventually wa=
s
forwarded to her. Luckily it was not opened or crushed. All is well, but
what if the person who it was wrongly delivered to had kept it? It could
have been a big mess, and I would have been sure it was delivered correctly
because the tracking told me so.
