Hello to all,
I have been reading a lot obout 1,2,3,4 or 4,3,2,1 glazes. I thought it
was familiar so I looked in Leach's _A Potters Book_, and lo and behold on
page 172 of my copy (12th printing) was cone 8 limestone clear that we
used a a base for clear, cleadon and other shiney glazes at University of
Puget Sound and San Jose State U. way back when.

It seems to me that according to several of my teachers Reduction firing
was a scarce black art before Leach's book hit these shores adn he and
Hamada toured the US doing workshops. BTW I had heard from some nisei and
sansei (second and third generation Japanese American) potters that Hamada
had a daughter attending college in the US at a time when one could take
$100.00 out of Japan. Hamada did the workshops to fund her education.
Turns out more than his daughter was educated the United States.

Just a little history as an old guy remembers it. Take it with a grain of
salt but I was told these stories by several people.
