well, things are falling into place rather well.

as most of you know, we have the clayart room for two days.
thursday and friday. the cost for rental at the convention center
is beyond silly...so, we had to compromise.

for example....i checked on wifi for the room...and they would be pleased
to turn it on for $1200 bucks for two days.

i am sure that next year in Seattle things will be back to normal.
we are rather confident that a hotel space will be more in keeping
with what we need for clayart. this year the hotels are giving nothing.
and what we do have is very very expensive. so, we will work it out,
and enjoy what we have been given.

i will be meeting with the nceca board and iron out details for our
association. most has been discussed, and it seems to be good
for both parties. i am going to ask bill schran to join me at the meeting
as an observer. nice to have two sets of ears, and it gives credibility
to things.

for any clayart friends that are local florida, the clayart room will
be open to the public, and you will not need nceca credentials to
be a part of clayart meetings and activities. just show up.

as always, the activities will always have a little flex room and
we have to allow for changes as things come up. and, we will list
activities. i have big paper and and a big felt pen packed along
with orange dots.

New Research Tool

NCECA is pleased to share news about a new on-line finding aid that may be=
=3D
of interest to anyone doing research into 20th century crafts in=3D
California. The Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) has played an important=
=3D
historical role in the development of the Los Angeles art scene and has=3D
launched the careers of well-known artists who are currently highlighted i=
n=3D
the exhibition Golden State of Craft: California 1960-1985, a part of the=
=3D
Getty's Pacific Standard Time initiative. The documents of this important=
=3D
historic period are now available in the CAFAM Records, 1965 =3D96 1997,=
=3D
housed in UCLA Library Special Collections.=3D
a=3D
ult/Mail/Local%20Folders/http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt5f59=
s=3D
1km/>An index is available online.=3D20

Former CAFAM librarian Joan Benedetti, working with the Special Collections=
=3D
staff of CAFAM, has completed the 14-year task of creating a=3D
keyword-searchable online finding aid now accessible to scholars worldwide=
=3D
in fields including art history, contemporary crafts, folk art, product=3D
design, world arts and cultures, folklore, museum studies, library and=3D
information studies, women's studies, and studies of Los Angeles, among=3D
others. This finding aid provides an index to the contents of the 6,208=
=3D
folders in the 550 document boxes that hold the records. Individual=3D
sections of the finding aid include "scope notes" that describe or offer=
=3D
background on that particular section.

Eva Zeisel: November 13, 1906 =3D96 December 30, 2011

=3D20

The ceramics world lost yet another giant as 2011 came to a close. A little=
=3D
over a month after turning 105, Eva Zeisel, designer of some of the 20th=
=3D
century's most seductive and iconic objects passed away. Born, Eva Amalia=
=3D
Striker, into a prosperous and assimilated Jewish family in Budapest,=3D
Hungary in 1906, she entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at age 17.=3D
Eva's mother encouraged her to enter an apprenticeship with a traditional=
=3D
artisan out of concern for her ability to make a living as a painter. She=
=3D
soon became the first woman member of traditional Hungarian Guild of=3D
Chimney Sweeps, Oven Makers, Roof Tilers, Well Diggers & Potters. One year=
=3D
after establishing a studio on her family's property her work was displaye=
d=3D
at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial, where she won an honorable mention.=
=3D
She began designing in the Kispester Factory in Budapest, but soon found=
=3D
work in Germany which promised to engage her in all phases of industrial=
=3D
design and production of ceramic wares. This established Zeisel as the=3D
first woman to move ceramic arts into mass production. In 1932, inspired b=
y=3D
new artistic and social movements taking place in Russia, she embarked on =
a=3D
vacation which led to expanded opportunities in industrial design. Young=
=3D
Eva took a position helping to modernize Russia's ceramic industry and=3D
traveled throughout the country to coordinate efforts to create a central=
=3D
manufactory. She was soon transferred to Leningrad and then appointed=3D
Artistic Director for the Porcelain and Glass Industries for all of Russia=
.=3D
In 1936 she was imprisoned in the NKVD prison for 16 months, accused of=3D
plotting against Stalin. Among other things, it was suggested she had=3D
hidden swastikas in porcelain designs and hidden guns for an assassination=
=3D
attempt. Close friend Arthur Koestler, who mentioned her in the dedication=
=3D
for his novel Darkness at Noon (1940) drew from Zeisel's experiences of=3D
solitary confinement to formulate his harrowing tale of totalitarian rule=
=3D
in Russia. In her work, Zeisel remained committed to the Bauhaus dictum=3D
that the highest form of industry is to mass produce works of art. Yet the=
=3D
aura of the hand, the body and the animal spirit embodied in her designs=
=3D
transcended their means of mechanical reproduction. Incorporating the=3D
profiles of belly buttons and baby's bottoms to invite tactile experience=
=3D
and the open mouths of birds to dispense cream, Zeisel expanded the=3D
language of form and function in mass produced wares. Through her life and=
=3D
work, Zeisel not only inspired successive generations of ceramic artists,=
=3D
she also presaged tendencies of hybridization in art, design and craft tha=
t=3D
have a very 21st century feel.
