traveling to san antonio

I am headed to San Antonio, Texas for work during the
last week of March. Are there any good pottery
places to go to in the surrounding area? I would
love to see some real Native American work (a recent
interest of mine) but it seems a drive to Arizona/New
Mexico would be quite far. I'd love any ideas -
current studios to museums.
TIA.

There is the Southwest Craft Center in SA; they often have
interesting things going on, lots of ceramics, terrific setting.
Phone book. There are numerous places on the Riverwalk and
Las Villitas where there are ceramics; some are good, some are
not. There is a large production pottery near SA, at McQueeny,
called McQueeny Pottery, (Walt Glass; mostly he hires people to
throw/glaze) and numerous potters in the general
area. Might be worthwhile to call one of the local colleges,
the teachers in the ceramics dept. can probably give you some
ideas. U. Texas-San Antonio has a sizeable ceramics dept, focus
is sculptural, Steve Reynolds is there. I would have sent this
directly, so as not to clutter the list, but you gave no email
address. My program will only respond to the sender, in this
case Clayart.

Hello all:

I will be traveling to Helotes (near San Antonio) on Friday through
Sunday. It is Baylor's Spring break and I only have the weekend, so...
Does anyone have some suggestions for clay watching in and around San
Antonio? I know nothing about pottery in SA and would love to see
something. Any ClayArters in the area this weekend?

Taylor, in Waco

The Southwest Craft Center is always interesting, a lovely setting
and often lots of good work to see. There is a big production pottery
in McQueeny (just outside S.A. on 35) too. I believe he has an
outlet on the River Walk, and in fact there are several retail clay
places on the river/downtown. Some of it is interesting. Some of
it is - ummmmm - not so.

Hi, Taylor in Waco. this is Paul Brinkmann, in San Antonio. The posts about
SA are indeed all good ones. The pottery in McQueeny, which is about 30
miles east of SA is owned by Walter Glass. He has an outlet store right in
town on Villita St. in the heart of La Villita. You might stop in Gruene,
Texas, where there is a large pottery, and one of the largest wood/ash kilns
I,ve ever seen. Gruene is just north of New Braunfels. Was in Helotes just
last Sunday, where we attended Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chruch. Hope
you enjoy your visit.

Started to answer and I must have hit the wrong button.

My Apologies.

I started to say that BLUE STAR ART CENTER would be a good spot to hit this Friday. First Friday of each month the many large and small galleries open for public perusal. UTSA has a gallery there as well as about 50 other groups and individuals. Have a beer at the Blue Star Micro brewery and pay nothing to brouse for hours.

The River walk is a great palce to go for a walk...especially during FIESTA (April 19-27th this year) Lots fo restaurants, beautiful flora etc... and touristy stuff... See the Alamo and closeby...visit La Villita where there is a clayart potter in residence!

I new to SA myself, but those are three things I would recommend.

Bon apotty!
