All I can say is WOW!!

I have just returned from the 24th Annual
North Carolina Potters Conference where we
hosted 5 Master Potters from Jingdezhen, China.
There were 7 translators on hand so we could all
ask questions.

We had a slab maker, a thrower, a trimmer,
an underglaze painter and an overglaze painter.

The thrower used over 1,500 lbs of clay in two days.
That is not a typo .. they had to order another
500 lbs on Friday night because they were running
out of clay!

He was challenged by the crowd to see how many
teabowls he could throw in 5 minutes ... 18 it turns out ...
all the same size and shape. He throws about one large
bowl per minute or two. The crowd was encouraged to
send up sketches of a pot which he would execute on the
spot.

The underglaze and overglaze painters were absolutely
hypnotic to watch ... the skill was amazing and somewhat
humbling to those of us who thought we could paint. I was so
sorry that some of my china painting friends were not there ...
the Master ( 40 years experience ) was willing to share through
the translator.

The slab maker was so precise and thoughtful ... no scoring
and slip for this crew. Their special joining slip was all they
needed.

The trimmer showed us exactly what sharp tools and skill
could do. They trim while the work is bone dry and they work
as quickly as the throwers. If your eye wandered for even a
minute you missed an entire project.

Potters Council Members should be proud to know we were
one of the sponsors. Bravo!!
