A very good, long time potter I know, who has also taught, uses
a plywood protector on the top of his kiln when loading or unloading.
It is cut to fit the diameter and shape of the kiln with a similar
shaped cutout. It simply lays on the kiln top to prevent dropped
pots or body pressure from damaging the bricks. Especially
a good idea when you have a number of students loading and
unloading a kiln. Very important to remember to remove it
when closing the lid and firing!!! Might be a good idea to paint it
a bright color.
