another important lesson:
use a cone pack with a 5,6,7 in a row.
make 5 of them. one on lower, middle, high and top.
put one in back too to make 5.
or, you can make 8.
or 3.
you will learn a great deal about your kiln.
cones are the cheapest thing there is in a pottery.
use them, lots of them.

automatic kilns need cone testing too. it helps you
set the software. match the software with your cone drop.

i never fire without a triple cone pack.
9,10,11.
i fire so that 11 is at 3 o'clock.
that really is a hot cone 10.

look at your cones and match to a chart.
what is the distance from 5 to 6 to 7????
how many degrees? they are not all the same.
10 and 11 are almost the same...so a bending 11 is
really a solid 10.

take control of your firing. all of it.
cones lead the research. trust them first and foremost.
