we have a store in a fancy mall in edina/ galleria, that claimed
years back to be `hand made`. their product came
from real artists. kevin caufield had some stuff there, other
friends too. high priced...good stuff. then, slowly, slowly
less hand made, more massed produced chinese. then more
stuff. cute, lots of color, less hand made. then, low and behold
went in there at christmas...no hand made. none.
but, lots of stuff that the owner could quad or triple in price.

my point is not to deny the gal a profit, or how she wants to run
her store. but, what was touted, and sort of still is: hand made
stuff. i don't know how much the public knows...but, not a
great deal.

i had a gal at the pool the other day say to me: `mel, i bought
a nice pot over at `three steps up`. (or such name) you know
how i love hand made things.` `wonderful`.
i just keep quiet.

they say that 50 percent of all galleries in new york city
go bankrupt each year. i wonder how that stacks up
in 2011? maybe 70 percent.

but, if you run a business to just help out artists, or dogs, or
firemen, and you do not make money....you don't get to go
to the land lord, gas company, power company and the insurance
folks and tell them:
`i am in business to be a helper, i don't make money, i am noble.
and, i cannot pay you this month.`
make sure your spouse keeps working 10/7/365 to support your efforts, as
you are more than non-profit, you are silly.
