Ligancy, according to Linus Pauling, is about the nature of atoms.
"The Ligancy of an atom is the number of atoms bonded to it or in contact
with it. The ligancy was formerly called the coordination number". See

For those of us, and I am one, who learned their basic chemistry during and
just after WW2 this is a good book to use to get yourselves up to date with
most of the basic principles of Chemical Science. It has a few things to sa=

about Kaolinite, Acetic Acid as well as Water that colleagues my appreciate=
.
