Workshop Series at Plinth Gallery Beginning in=3D20
February 2011=3D2C Plinth Gallery will host a series of ceramic workshops i=
n
the Gallery=3D92s recently remodeled studio space. Three workshops will=
=3D20
each emphasize surface decoration and finishing techniques=3D2C and will be=
=3D20
instructed by the Gallery guest artist for the month. The=3D20
series opens on February 5th for a one-day seminar with Shalene=3D20
Valenzuela. Shalene=3D2C whose show=3D2C =3D93Recipe for Disaster=3D94 is =

ery=3D20
exhibit for February=3D2C will demonstrate a variety of=3D20
surface-embellishment techniques and application of images. Through=3D20
slide presentation=3D2C lecture and hands-on demonstration=3D2C she will sh=
are=3D
=3D20
her unique process of illustrating on bisque surfaces and incorporating=3D2=
0
print aspects with her drawn images. Shalene earned her MFA in=3D20
ceramics from the California College of Arts and Crafts=3D2C and has=3D20
recently taught at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. A former=3D20
resident at the Archie Bray Foundation=3D2C she currently works at The Clay=
=3D20
Studio of Missoula=3D2C Montana. Her quirky=3D2C humorous narrative vessel=
s=3D20
have been exhibited nationally. On April 2=3D2C Yoko=3D20
Sekino-Bove will demonstrate combinations of decoration techniques=3D20
including sgraffito=3D2C carving=3D2C stamping=3D2C and a variety of glaze =
painti=3D
ng.
Other wet clay surface techniques will include mishima and slip=3D20
painting. Students will actively participate in this workshop and make a
variety of clay stamps to use on their own work. A supply list will be=3D2=

Yoko Sekino-Bove is a 2011 Niche Finalist. She earned=3D20
her BFA in graphic design from Musashino Art University in Tokyo=3D2C Japan=
=3D
=3D2C
and worked as a commercial graphic designer in Los Angeles before her=3D20
passion took her to study ceramics at the University of Oklahoma where=3D20
she earned her MFA. After serving as an apprentice at Rowantrees Pottery
in Maine=3D2C then artist-in-residence at the Armory Art Center in Florida=
=3D
=3D2C
Yoko settled as a studio artist in Washington=3D2C PA. Her work has been=
=3D20
exhibited at both commercial and educational galleries nationally and=3D20
internationally and is included in museums and private collections. Her=3D2=
0
ceramic works are featured in the Lark Books=3D2C =3D93500 Cups=3D94=3D2C =

and Chargers=3D94=3D2C and a wide variety of periodicals including =3D93Ame=

Connie
Norman will conduct the final segment of the series on May 7=3D2C 2011. =

Connie will focus on glazing techniques for terra cotta and white=3D20
earthenware pottery=3D2C using masking tape and other office supplies to cu=
t
resist-style designs. Students should bring several pieces of=3D20
bisque-fired work to experiment with glazing techniques demonstrated in=3D2=
0

including Strictly Functional=3D2C Ceramics USA=3D2C Origins in Clay=3D2C a=

exhibition at NCECA=3D2C 2006. Connie has received numerous fellowships=
=3D20
for her work=3D2C which has also been published in =3D93Ceramics Monthly=3D=
94=3D20
magazine. Most recently=3D2C her signature work has been included in Lark=
=3D20
Books=3D2C =3D93500 Vases=3D94. Each day-long workshop=3D20
begins at 9am=3D2C ends by 5pm=3D2C and includes lunch. Cost is $85 for ea=
ch=3D20
seminar=3D2C or register for all three sessions for $230. Space is limited=

to 20 students=3D2C so registration will be on a first-come=3D2C first serv=
ed=3D20
basis and advance payment will guarantee a space. Specific information=3D20

refunded if made by 5pm on the Monday before the workshop. Students=3D20
