First, thanks for all who have commented on this topic. Very useful info t=
o
chew on.

Someone outside the group mentioned google sites as a way of having a free
website. Has anyone tried them and if so, what experience have you had wit=
h
them? Are there any other "free" hosting services out there? My final
motivation for a website came from comments at a group sale this Christmas
season. Several customers asked if I had a website and it made me think it
would be a good idea to help establish a customer base. I envision a rathe=
r
simple site so not planning on spending a tremendous amount of time on it -
just basics, and the plan would be to do it myself. Again, any info is
always appreciated. Cheers, MJ

I like freeservers.com for hosting it can be free with banners/ads or for l=
ess
than $25 a YEAR, you have plenty of space, many easy to use attractive
templates.

I used them for my webiste that was designed and uploaded but also for a
gallery I belonged to that I followed a template. the support is great with=
800
no and a response center in the US so far;)

Mayssan, settling down to a routine in our new digs in SC.

Hey MJ,
I've used google sites a few times to create free sites. For example a mid=
dle
school track website . That was
almost a year ago. I liked the functionality but personally I didn't like
the look of their templates. And there weren't a lot of detailed controls
for changing the appearance. Maybe it has gotten better? Easy to use
though, and I would guess there are plenty of google services that you coul=
d
integrate if needed.

There are plenty of free website options but they all have some kind of
drawback. Like the url. I haven't come across any site which will give yo=
u
your own domain name for free. But you can usually buy one from the free
service or from another domain name registrar for $8-15 per year.

Another drawback: a lot of free services put ads on your page or at the ver=
y
least a link to their homepage. Some people think it's more professional t=
o
have your own domain name and no ads.

I found 000webhost which claims free hosting but I haven't tried it yet. I=
t
looks more like a place where you create your own site and then upload with
ftp.

I've also used wordpress.com which is more blog centered but can also do
static pages. Last time it was to create a computer lab
webpage.
I listed a few free web page services in a previous email. From what I
remember, I think I liked Weebly the best. Good luck with everything.

Hey MJ (this is the first time I've replied without using the webform...I
hope I'm doing this right)

Google sites is OK, but if you get lots of visitors it will cut you off for
a day or two because you're using more than your alloted free bandwidth. I
had a blog feature some of my designs and the Google sites page vanished
until the hub bub died down. I got tons of e-mails asking for information
since my page was down, and I probably missed some good connections.

If you want to post images or videos (not uploaded to YouTube or vimeo, but
posted on your own website) think about buying a domain and hosting space.

After learning the hard way I bought space from godaddy.com, which was at
first confusing, but they actually called me at home a day after I signed u=
p
and went over how to run my website with me. It's a fairly fantastic
service because they help you out, but definitely get a template package if
you aren't a super nerd.

I shelled out $150 and let it run trouble-free for the next 3 years.
(Meanwhile, Google Page Creator updated to Google sites, and half of my
original content was erased in the transition, then it crapped out when
there were too many visitors. I have a long, sordid history with Google
Sites.) Free can be very, very taxing since it's hard to back up, and they
control your stuff. Whereas Godaddy would never delete me files, lwet's me
back up my website in one click, and if I have a bunch of visitors, I have
the option to automatically bump up my bandwidth so no one gets "too many
visitors" errors ever again (ugh.)

Also, don't overlook your ISP. For example, Comcast users have 1gig
of webspace for a webpage.

When you plug your email into Google, the Google Site is the first hit:

I couldn't find any of your other pages. Only board postings and
Blogger mentions.

One of the things I would recommend when choosing a web server is to =3D
call them before signing up. You can get a good idea of how responsive =3D
they will be if you have a problem. Call all who you are considering. =3D
How easy is it to talk to a real person? Does the listed phone number =3D
even work? It can be a eye opener.
