need to glaze (on c.5 clay)

Verna asks:

'If I put a design using wax resist on an area on a eating surface is it
food safe or do I need to fire again with
a clear glaze?"

I am not sure at all, at all, what the question is. The "fire again" =3D
part throws me off. =3D20

If you are applying your resist to bare unglazed clay, then --guess =3D
what--the clay will be bare and unglazed in that area. Meaning that it =3D
most likely will not be
a good surface to eat off. In all likelihood metal cutlery will mark =3D
it, as well as making a most unpleasant sound when moving across it. If =
=3D
the clay...as said by Dan Hill--is not very well vitrified there may be =3D
absorption and staining. =3D20

Some common sense must be used. If you are making a bowl in which you =3D
plan to store potatoes, or apples, or pears I doubt unglazed clay will =3D
cause a problem. But if you are making a mixing bowl or a dinner =3D
plate...where beets and curries will eagerly stain, and mashed potatoes =
=3D
and gravy cling to the surface for all their are worth if allowed to =3D
dry....Not good idea, not at all.

And by the way...the c.5/6 business has naught to do with it. It =3D
could be a lower fired clay, a higher fired one...Only when you get to =3D
true porcelain would glaze be irrelevant.
