Chickens need both grit and calcium. They don't have teeth. They eat small
stones or grit, which ends up in the gizzard, which grinds the food and
grit together, pulverizing the food before it goes down the intestines.

Without adequate calcium, eggshells are thin and can even be non-existent.
Too much calcium makes the eggs rough. Some people clean their eggshells,
dry and crumble them and feed them back to the chickens. I feed crushed
oyster shells, although some feed has calcium added, because my birds free
range and only eat manufactured food when I confine them to the coop.
