Linda,

Have you thought about studying up on majolica? Some of those painters
might be able to help you out on color blending, painting technique, and th=
e
like, so you would have something to talk about and something to learn from
the painters. I done a faux majolica using a white glaze base and Mayco
Strokes and Coats to simulate paint with some nice results.

I think you can get an extender and/or a blender for the acrylics that give=
s
you a lot more working time on the palette so you don't have a bad
investment.

I completely sympathise with your story. We have two "art things" in
our town. One is a "Fine Arts Association", which has lectures demos
etc once a month. As a young (under 40) potter, I felt completely out
of place in a group of painters and drawers who were almost all over
60. They all had their own little cliques and while moderately
friendly I definitely didn't fit in. While I quite enjoyed the demos
and lectures from a "all knowledge is interesting" point of view, I
have no desire to paint or draw, so I stopped going. They also
organised exhibits in various places round the city (libraries, city
hall, courts, coffee shops etc) they were only for 2-D art (or art
that could be hung at any rate).

The other is a guild (with a shop), it is juried (which may be a plus
or minus). While I have been encourage by several members to join, I
felt that they were also very cliquey, and frankly snooty about
everyone else. While competence in your craft is to be desired, that
doesn't mean that you're better than everyone else in any sense but
the explicit. And to be honest with you in some cases it probably just
means you've had more time to practice!

So in the end I've plowed my own furrow. I really didn't find anything
useful in either of these organisations. To great extent I think this
was due to my youth - and a little bit due to the fact I'm a
functional potter.
