Milan Kundera described kitsch as being art from
which all traces of the potentially objectionable
had been scrubbed.

The nice thing about this definition is that it
defines Jeff Koons completely out of consideration
as an 'artist.'

The history of the term is more interesting -- it
came into common use in the last century, right as
decorative reproductions of inoffensive decoration
were becoming common. As a derogatory term, it
may be identified as the word the art elite uses to
diminish the taste of the common man. On the other
hand, "a chicken in every pot, and a garden gnome
on every lawn" doesn't make a stirring campaign
slogan.
