so many that are inspectors, city folks, make up their
minds long before they ask you anything.

and, they will not care.
just shut you down.
ignorance is bliss, and that goes for many.

i have told the story before.
friends have a great kiln. in a warehouse.
they decided to add electronic ignition to their
new kiln, avoiding the hassle with the inspector.

but, when he got there...`i like pilot lights.`
no logic, just he likes them.
remove the 800 dollar system, then put in
pilots.

so, after the inspection, back went the
igniters.
he also felt that the pipes should be painted in three
colors.
red, blue, green or something...now what does that
have to do with anything? maybe in an industrial building
with large numbers of pipes...but, in a private studio?
so.
paint the pipes. and when he calls the woman with a ph.d. in women's stud=
ies
`well little lady`....he almost got killed...but, you keep your mouth shut.

and, having travelled around the country looking at kilns,
and chatting with donovan palmquist...it is really odd, scarry, and
frustrating.

so, with this story in mind, what is a person to do if you are firing salt
and someone objects? nothing. you will be shut down.
it does not matter what is coming from the stack..it is one foolish compla=
int.

it is why i spend so much time in my new book...`talk to neighbors, get
them involved. give them pots, be a great neighbor..make things, repair
the kids bikes and never be arrogant or a nuisance. ` make sure
the neighbors are a part of your art. it is up to you.

also, when dealing with inspectors...get dressed up. coat and tie.
gals, a nice dress. never appear to be a hippie, dorky fool. you can do
that at art fairs, but never with city fathers, or you will be ten points d=
own
when the game begins. and, arm yourself with really good information
written down...or xerox'd.
remember, being right does not carry much weight any longer.
emotional fear and panic rules a great deal of our lives. (want to buy
5 million doses of swine flu vaccine...cheap.?)
