From the viewpoint of an artist and potter who has tried to make a living
from the making of fine porcelain pottery for three decades, the major harm
that I see in all the mindless production drek that is sold and consumed is
that my potential audience has no idea what they're looking at when they se=
e
beautifully made porcelain pottery. Because they have no understanding of
what they're looking at, the work has no value for them, and I'm SOL.
It has to do with establishing a tradition of fine craft, so that an
audience becomes informed over time and is educated and therefore
appreciative, something that is only beginning to happen in certain areas o=
f
this country. I'm a product of university training, and I had no instructio=
n
whatsoever as to how to make it as a potter. I thought if I moved within an
hour of a major city and opened my doors a four times a year, I could make
it, but I was wrong. That model doesn't work any more. The prices of
everything keep going up, and people balk at a $20 mug.
