my book

Vince Pitelka on wed 21 jul 10

Recently there was some buzz from people I know on Clayart about the fact
that my book, "Clay: A Studio Handbook," is out of print and used copies
were selling on amazon marketplace for such high prices. I am pleased to
report that ACerS has contracted with a print-on-demand company to keep
producing the current edition until the second edition is done (which will
be at least a year). So, the current edition is available once more, and
you can find information about it at
http://ceramicartsdaily.org/bookstore/best-sellers/clay-a-studio-handbook/.

Sorry for the merciless self-promotion, but I have had so many inquiries
about my book recently, and this was the best way to get the word to a lot
of people I know.

Thanks to those who made kind comments in response to my post about my =3D
book. Larry, you got a deal, and I'd be happy to pay you an =3D
eight-figure salary of $00,000,001. How's that? Regarding the =3D
price-split on signed copies, let's see you talk ACerS into that. =3D
Taylor, I have lots of old jackets and some of them certainly contain =3D
clay dust, so I could sign one and send it to you. How's that?

Love to all from Kamloops, BC, where I am teaching a workshop. British =3D
Columbia is so incredibly beautiful -=3D20

Hmmmm..... Larry did you consider that Vince's eight figure number =3D

You obviously need to hire me as your agent.... my take is only 75% of =3D

What?! You wrote a book?

I hope it has lots of pictures and comes with a complete set of tools
and 50 lbs of self centering clay.

Can I get an autographed clay-dust jacket for my copy?

Vince,

It's great that you wrote a book and it's great that its popular.

Given your contribution to the clay community a little self promotion is
not a bad thing.

I completely agree. Vince, your book is a wonderful, complete
resource. Obviously, a labor of love, but also the gift that keeps on
giving. I have used it many times. It is on the shelf and I consider
it one of the principal sources to be consulted when embarking on a
new clay adventure! I am very glad it will be reprinted..

Is that why I suddenly found a copy at a "standard" price this week? I che=
cked out your book via inter-library loan and it took only an evening to kn=
ow I had to have a copy. I've had an eBay watch, Amazon watch (through cam=
elcamelcamel.com), and have searched high and low... $120 and up is really=
out of my price range, ya know?

Then earlier in the week, it shows up on Amazon for a tad under list price =
through third-party sellers, though delivery time is "mid-August". I was e=
cstatic. Wasn't really in the budget, but I'm thinking "I haven't seen it =
for under $100, I better snatch it while I have the chance."

I hope the POD quality is good. Some of them are pretty high quality, but =
sometimes they can be hit and miss. Looking forward to getting my mitts o=
n it.

I taught a workshop in Kelowna (2003) south of Kamloops. I sure wish I =3D
was there now. Having spent most of my life in Montana, I am not =3D
adjusting to the heat of deep South Tip o' Texas even after four =3D
years...and I don't like hurricanes and tropical storms. Enjoy the =3D

Apparently this wasn't the case.

The book arrived on Saturday, and if this is a POD (print-on-demand) editio=
n, it's a damned good one, with a sewn binding. There's no evidence that i=
t's a POD reprint (seems identical to the one I got from the library), so i=
t looks to me like Axner has found a few copies of the standard printing.

Already, no third-party on Amazon lists new or used for under $140. For so=
me reason, Axner listed it on Amazon and discontinued the listing shortly a=
fter I ordered. But their website still says "while supplies last".

I just wish they hadn't shipped it in a light padded envelope... the envel=
ope was torn and the corners of the book are banged up. A book this heavy =
requires better packaging. (I've had to deal with this from Amazon's wareh=
ouses, so it's not just Axner.)

But at least I finally have my own copy. The list price of $45 is very rea=
sonable for the wealth of information this book contains, and Axner's price=
is less than that.
