corelite shelves and kiln wash

I purchased some corelite shelves a few months ago and put 3 coats of kiln
wash on the shelves. They have been in about 6 firings since then, one to
cone 8, a few to cone 6, and the rest were bisque. I am new to firing as
this is my first kiln. I had been told that the kiln wash would flake off
but that has not happened. I just had my first glaze drip and the kiln was=
h
does not appear to have been that effective. I then was told by someone
else that the kiln wash does not appear to bre releasing from their corelit=
e
shelves, but is releasing from other shelves.

Am I doing something wrong and should the kiln wash be different for these
shelves? Any help is appreciated.

Cheers, MJ

Hi - are there different kinds of kiln wash and might some of them work
better on these shelves than others? Also, is there a different method of
application that might be better? I fire to cone 6 for glaze firings,
although I just did a firing that was to cone 8 and may do more of that.
Any help is appreciated. MJ

What I write is my thoughts based on my observations working with and
testing various shelves over the past couple of years.

The Corelites I use I also found the wash to not flake off. I use a wash of
50/50 by volume of kaolin & alumina. I can scrape or grind this wash, but
with a little effort.
I found some other high alumina shelves that I've had for many years also
seem to want to hold the wash more than cordierite shelves.

I first thought the way the Corelites are made, they are extruded, while
solid shelves are usually dry pressed, might be a factor, but it may be the
composition of the high alumina shelves that have a tendency to grab onto
the wash.

MJ
We never, ever, use kiln wash in an attempt to prevent
glaze drips from sticking. As our bodies are quite
vitreous the wash allows shrinkage movement across the
shelves & minimal to zero plucking. Our brew, 90%
zircon flour, 10% kaolin, verrry thin wash. Other
potters have different recipes, methods & reasons.
Glaze drips are zipped off with a stone blade in the
air die grinder.

I can only say that I use Coralite shelves and they don't seem to have
any problem holding or releasing kiln wash, I fire to cone 10.
I wonder if its your wash recipe maybe? I use a commercial wash.
