making clay with kids

The elementary students I teach just finished processing some clay
from a local construction site. This time around I added a second
screening to the process and the resulting slurry is perfect.

When I tell a class, "OK, you can dip your hands in the bucket and
start squeezing the clay" there is an audible change in tone as you
can hear and almost feel the excitement in their voices. Many kids
imagine that it is going be gross, then once they feel the slippery-
smooth, cool clay on their skin on a warm summer day they love it. I
had two 6th grade boys ask me to get them summer jobs doing this.
They proposed working for one dollar an hour.

Here's a link to see the process we used...

John,

I see that you have been named Teacher of the Year! Way to go - I
totally understand why you were selected. I can tell from your posts
that you LOVE teaching and that your students are really inspired by
you. Congratulations!
