New Book and New Art
by Guangzhen Po Zhou

The new artwork titled =3D93Enamelware
Age--Shanghai Nostalgia=3D2C The Iron Rice Bowl=3D94 by Guangzhen Po Zhou w=

Art Museum in May 2010.

The new book-autobiography by
Guangzhen Po Zhou=3D2C titled Carrying Clay
Art on My Iron Shoulder was published
by Jiangsu Fine Art Publishing House in China with over 180=3D2C000 Chinese
characters in April 2010. It is about the life and art of Guangzhen Zhou in
both China
and the US
since the late 1950=3D92s. He hopes the book will able to be translated in =
En=3D
glish
and published in the US
soon.

Guangzhen Zhou=3D92s early works were
figurative and surrealistic. Due to the writing of his autobiography=3D2C m=
an=3D
y of
his memories resurfaced. He decided to create these images out of clay as t=

illustrations for his new books=3D2C the series =3D93The Enamelware Age=3D2=

Nostalgia.=3D94 His new works are both
realistic and surrealistic=3D2C and techniques such as hand-building=3D2C p=

throwing=3D2C underglaze=3D2C overglaze=3D2C decal transfer are used.

It was also called =3D93Iron Rice Bowl=3D94
for its description of =3D93The Planned Economy System=3D94 of that time. T=
here=3D
were no
plastic products in China
at that time. Enamelware was very popular instead. In Shanghai=3D2C if some=
on=3D
e assigned a job to work with
any state run business would receive a enamel rice bowl with his or her ID
number printed on it. That is where the title of =3D93Enamelware Age=3D94 c=
ame =3D
from.
=3D93Enamelware Age=3D97Shanghai Nostalgia=3D94 reflects upon the hard life=
in Sh=3D
anghai before =3D93the
Reform and Open Door=3D94 policy. Guangzhen Zhou believes that these images=
a=3D
re
part of memories of entire generations at that time in Shanghai. There are =
=3D
many stories behind these
images. Guangzhen Zhou would like to express the memories of his childhood =
=3D
in Shanghai.
