Visiting Kamm=3D92s Art=3D2C the World=3D92s Largest Teapot
Collection

=3D20

On February 28=3D2C I was contacted by
Tony Huntley=3D2C Tony=3D2C Zhangfa Qian (visiting artist from Yixing) and =
visi=3D
ted the
Kamm=3D92s museum-like house in the Encino hills=3D2C Los Angeles area. Glo=
ria =3D
and Sonny Kamm are
major patrons of the International Small Teapot Competition and Show in Sad=
=3D
dleback College=3D2C Southern
California.=3D20

As we were guided by a GPS=3D2C it
wasn=3D92t difficult to get there. First we saw the Peter Shire: a tall=3D2=
C
stainless-steel teapot mailbox sculpture standing next to the gate.

Inside=3D2C I saw a ceramic piece of
frogs in a pan by David Gilhooly sitting right on the stove in the kitchen
(while Sonny was boiling water for tea). =3D20

Shelves with teapots were
everywhere in the house - from the garden and the guest room to the bedroom=
=3D
s
and the bathrooms.=3D20

There were many inventive
contemporary artworks by American and International clay artists with power=
=3D
ful
visual impact. Most of the teapots are ceramic=3D2C non-functional sculptur=
es=3D
.
However=3D2C there were also many teapots made of other materials=3D2C as w=
ell =3D
as
contemporary paintings and furniture. There are teapots by widely known art=
=3D
ists=3D2C including Rudy Autio=3D2C
Marilyn Levine=3D2C Bevely Mayeri=3D2C Adrian Saxe=3D2C Akio Takamori=3D2C =
Richard =3D
Notkin=3D2C
Raymon Elozua=3D2C Michael Lucero=3D2C Sergei Isupov and Ralph Bacerra. I h=
ave =3D
seen
many artists whom I know=3D2C and many artists whom I hadn=3D92t known. The=
re a=3D
re also
many antique teapots from all over the world.

The exhibition titled "The Artful Teapot: 20th Century Expressions
from the Kamm Collection" traveled to COPIA=3D2C the American Center for Wi=
ne=3D
=3D2C
Food & the Arts=3D2C Napa=3D2C California=3D3B the Montgomery Museum of Fin=
e Arts=3D
=3D2C
Alabama=3D3B the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art=3D2C Toronto=3D2C=
Ontar=3D
io=3D2C
Canada=3D3B the Long Beach Museum of Art=3D2C Long Beach=3D2C California=3D=
3B the C=3D
hicago
Cultural Center=3D2C Chicago=3D2C Illinois=3D3B and the Mint Museum of Craf=
ts & D=3D
esign=3D2C
Charlotte=3D2C North Carolina from 2002 to 2004. The exhibit was subsequent=
ly
extended to three more museums: The Bellevue Arts Museum=3D2C Bellevue=3D2C
Washington=3D3B the Peabody
Essex Museum=3D2C
Salem=3D2C Massachusetts:
and the Dixon Museum=3D2C
Memphis=3D2C Tennessee.

=3D93The teapots at our home are just
small part of our collection. Most of it is in our Kamm Teapot Foundation
warehouse in North Carolina. The total collection
should be over 10=3D2C000 pieces=3D94 the now retired estate-planning attor=
ney =3D
Sonny
Kamm told us.

Sonny and Gloria Kamm have been
collecting teapots for almost 30 years. Sonny Kamm said that he and his wif=
=3D
e plan to donate all of their teapot
collection to an existing museum where it might have a positive social impa=
=3D
ct
and benefit the art world. A number of museums are very interested in the
Kamms=3D92 teapot collection.

Questions and Answers
for the China
trip in June 2010

Q. Is it true that=3D2C when compared with the previous costs of
your China
trip=3D2C the price has increased?

A. Yes. Firstly=3D2C Chinese currency has been going up every
year=3D2C and the costs in China
have been raised as well. For example=3D2C the international round-trip air=
li=3D
ne
tickets from San Francisco to Shanghai was around $700 to $800=3D2C but dur=
in=3D
g June
of 2010=3D2C the prices will be over $1=3D2C500 ($1500 deduction if you buy=
you=3D
r own
international air tickets)=3D2C which means the costs have about doubled. I=
n
addition=3D2C because of Shanghai World Expo=3D2C costs such as hotel rooms=
and=3D
meals
will increase during that time.

Q. What is the exchange rate now?

A. $1 USD exchanges to about 6.8RMB. The Chinese currency is
still going up every few months. However=3D2C our charge is fixed and our s=
er=3D
vices
are guaranteed.=3D20

Q. How many people are you going to take for this trip?

A. It will be a small group. We are limited to 16 people or
less. We still have a few openings left so far. If anyone signs up before M=
=3D
arch
31=3D2C he or she will receive a $50 discount. Also=3D2C we still have a sc=
hola=3D
rship available
for people who are willing do the slides presentation in China. They
will qualify for a scholarship up to $400.

Tips for Using the Clay
Tools--The Texture Mat Works Good

In my nostalgic series of
clay sculptures titled Enamelware Age-Shanghai=3D2C I have made some projec=
ts=3D
by
using the texture mat-wood design. I use the texture mat to impress the pat=

tern
on the clay surface first=3D2C and then use a knife to carve details. Once =
I =3D
have
painted with different oxides=3D2C the results come out differently. The te=

An email from Japan ceramic artists

Professor Fumio Shimada at Tokyo University of the Arts and I have known

Hello Po=3D2C

Thank you so much for your message.

Yes=3D2C the aftermath of the tsunamis is overwhelmingly devastating.

It's heartbreaking and there are no words than can describe this catastroph=
=3D
e.

At the moment we are facing difficult times since the nuclear reactors are =
=3D
in
danger.

There are electricity cuts even in Tokyo and many trains are not running in
order to save energy.

Shops are running out of supplies since people are in a sort of panic state=
=3D
.

We have received numerous messages of support from abroad and we really
appreciate it.

I just hope that this nightmare will come to an end soon.

All the best=3D2C

Cristina

About our English

The Chinese Clay Art Newsletter was established at the end
