Sometime in the (late) 70's NCECA decided to try a summer conference. It wa=
s held at Greeley, CO... In those days NCECA's typical attendance was 1500 =
to 2000 participants, the Greeley conference brought in about 500... If I r=
emember right, it pretty much put NCECA into the red... I think most of us =
are too used to doing summertime stuff during the summer, an education conf=
erence is best suited for times when education is in play. When I was teach=
ing, students and I would go to NCECA and have the advantage of coming BACK=
to the CLASSROOM and be affected by what we just experienced. In the summe=
r (I think) very few students would attend, they scatter to home and summer=
jobs -and the conference is the best opportunity for STUDENTS to get an id=
ea of the complexity and spectrum of the field. I would not have attended G=
reeley except that it occurred early enough in the summer and I scheduled a=
stop-over on my way to California from the Middle West, where I was
teaching... had it been scheduled far from my route I would NOT have atten=
ded... As a side-note, I used to look forward to the conferences that were =
scheduled NOT on our Spring Break. It was an opportunity for me, and my stu=
dents, to get away from school and still have the advantage of a week off t=
o pursue other things. But those were very different days... -Rimas

I was at the NCECA IN GREELEY. There was a demonstration of a bread =3D
oven, and the most critical=3D20
thing at the time was that it was in a DRY county. I drove down with =3D
students from Montana and we drove the back roads home via =3D
Yellowstone..not a direct route. Great trip. Small conference. I think =3D
about 500 attended.Usually the East coast and West coast have the =3D
largest attendances. Wichita ('80?)was another small one. Our travel =3D
group of two carloads got caught in a snow storm in Limon, Co.
My favorite locations have been Phila., Syracuse (loved the hotel) both =3D
Portland times, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Rochester, NY, and Boston.
Madison, WI and Champaign, Il were small one too.
