china painting

I've been lurking for a few months now and am getting hoards of useful
information so I hope someone has some information about health hazards
associated with china painting.

My understanding is that china paints have low levels of lead and should
not be used on food surfaces. Are there other hazards that I should be
aware of such as:

-having the materials in the studio (I was taught to sand the paint
after each firing, will this result in toxic dust? How can this be
managed?)

-firing the kiln (are the fumes toxic, and what about residue left in
the kiln?)

-are there good, nontoxic china paints available?

Any input will be gratefully received
