Aloha all: can anyone tell me if this basic 4-3-2-1 glaze is totally clear =

If you mean the Cone 8 Limestone Glaze listed under Pale or Colourless
Glazes in Leach's A Potter's Book, yes. All but the benonite.

Dean,

I use a variation of that glaze for my celadon. It's milky with lots
of tiny bubbles at cone 9, and gets a little clearer at cone 12. It's
definitely not a clear glaze. The whiting releases a lot of gas I
believe, which causes the tiny bubbles.

I advise you to test it first.

Applied thinly it is clear,
thickly it is a grey-white clear.

I agree with Paul:

Here is a clear I got from Shirley Johnson:

Whiting 20.5
Flint 31.5
