I used to deal with GoDaddy and found their "hard-sell-click-through"
waste of time very annoying. Most annoying to me is that they do
not have a toll-free support number. For someone like me, who
actually pays by the minute for phone calls, it is very irritating to
not only be put on hold, but also be paying for the privilege.

And yes, this instant "sorry the domain is taken" happened with
them, as well as with another domain hosting service.
You can search for available names with any hosting service,
even if you don't end up hiring them to host your website. I'm
not sure you can blame this domain snatching on the company
you searched from.

All of the website hosting companies are set up a little different,
and it can be hard to figure out how to navigate everything, but
I think any and all end up being OK in the end. I use "1 and 1".
They are a huge European company, are a few $$ cheaper than
GoDaddy, and have pretty good on-line as well as live support.
The live support is in, I think, judging by the names and accents,
the Philippines. I think GoDaddy is making a mistake by "going
cheap" and not offering toll-free support.

The web hosting company that I use, FatCow, had one other problem that
I think is probably widespread. I have a Mac and in spite of their
assurances when I signed up with them, their "easy to use templates"
will not work with a Mac. I spent almost a month with them, with many
calls, e-mails and live chat sessions before one of the tech guys
tried to make it work on his Mac at home. He called me back the next
day to tell me that, not only had he not been able to make it work
himself, but he had talked to one of their programmers who told him it
could not be made to work with a Mac.
I tried GoDaddy but I gave up and switched to FatCow because I could
never find anything on the GoDaddy web site. There were just too many
flashing images and ads for other stuff. I called tech support a
couple of times because I couldn't find what I needed, and sure
enough, when someone told me exactly where to look amidst the bling,
it was there, usually in very small type, in a very small box. They
did at that time have tech support.
I ended up having to build my web site in the software that Mac comes
with, which I must say is amazingly easy to use, but somewhat limited.

Make sure, however, that you go through the process and before the final
click, that you close the window out. They will send you a comeback code
which knocks $50 off.

To say I've been happy with Lunarpages would be an understatement. That's
why I recommended them to Susan--great service, great to work with, I recal=
l
understandable English speaking thus far. I also have the coop site with
Godaddy who I have also been happy with but will migrate them over to lunar
because lunar gives me more for my dollar.

Hello Susan and all:

I have my web hosting with freeservers.com for $23.95 a year without banner=
s, and lots of storage. and my domain name is with dotster.com $15 a year. =
no problems with either of them and when I needed help they were there with=
an 800 no. I don't know now as i have not used support in a long time.

I split the domain registration from the hosting because someone on clayart=
said it is safer just in case one or the other go under, which made sense =
to me.

And I think YOU are the one making the mistake by "going cheap" and
not being willing to pay for a lousy phone call to get good service.

While I don't appreciate the web-page blingy "offers" found on
godaddy, their support people have ALWAYS been knowledgeable, quick,
helpful, professional, and courteous.

As someone working in computers for 50 years (well... 49.5) and with
the web since the beginning, this quality of service is a rarity in
these times.

If you think a free call to off-shore tech/customer support is a
bargain, well... we have different values.

Yes, I have flat-rate long distance, so it doesn't cost me anything
extra, but even when I was paying for long distance, it was pennies a
minute.

I can't imagine that you (or anyone) would need to speak with their
support more than a couple of times a year, IF that often. What's
the saying??? Penny-wise, pound-foolish.

Regards,
Maurice
