James,

Stumbleupon is a site that features interesting, cool, unusual images or =
=3D
stories found on the internet. It is continually updated by contributors =
=3D
who find neat stuff. The traffic to your site probably means that =3D
someone has posted an image of one of your beautiful pots, and people =3D
are following up by visiting your site. The traffic from Facebook =3D
probably means that someone has found the link on Stumbleupon, thought =3D
that it was cool, and is sharing it with Facebook friends.=3D20

Stumbleupon is an add on for the Firefox browser. People who use it can
rate websites with an thumbs up or thumbs down and then that info is shar=

ed
with others who use the add on. It's a way of sharing websites and
recommending them to others.

All in all, it's probably a good thing you're getting hits from them.

I have been getting website hits lately from stumbleupon.com and facebook.
Does anyone know how this might happen, as I have never even been to either
of those sites in my life (and I'm not even sure what stumbleupon is)?

Thanks.

Oh Grandpa James!

It is like Daniel says, someone used one of these sites to mark your
site because they wanted to share what they found with their friends.

Facebook and stumbleupon mystery solved, and it is exactly as you all
stated. Thank you all for the lesson. A kindly clayart member emailed to
say that he had posted links to my site on those sites as well as something
called twitter as a way to bring exposure to my silly pots. I must say tha=
t
I am quite flattered that someone would do that for a total stranger, and
also impressed that a couple of off-hand posts to those sites could generat=
e
about 500 hits in just a couple of days. He must be one popular guy!

A few months ago I noticed about 400 hits over a couple of days from a site
called ultimatebetas. I went to the site and discovered that it was about
pet fish, and could not imagine why fish-folk would be looking at my site.
After a lot of digging, I found that one of the fish-folk had posted a link
to an image of one of my pots just to illustrate to his other fish-friends
the general shape of a fish tank he wanted to make! These Interwebs sure
make the world smaller. Very glad Al Gore invented it.

All the best.

Lee...

Al gore did, in 1991, draft and sponsor the bill, at the urging of a
consortium of computer scientists and universities, that funded the
department that in turn ultimately funded the development of the Mosaic web
browser two years later, and that browser did go a long way toward
popularizing the already existing World Wide Web. Before the invention of
the World Wide Web (the system of "websites" that we now think of as the
Internet), we had to use a bunch of oddball programs like archie, finger,
gopher, wais, and a host of others I cannot even remember now, to access th=
e
various files that were available out there. The World Wide Web, however,
is NOT the Internet. It is merely one of many services running over the
Internet. Al had nothing whatsoever to do with creating or inventing or
whatever, the Internet, and played only an extremely ancillary role in the
development of the World Wide Web. Other than the funding bill he
sponsored, his contribution seems to amount to little more than talking. A
whole lot of talking to be sure, but just talking. While Al was, to his
credit, early amongst legislators to see the importance of the Internet, th=
e
bottom line is that he attempted to take far more credit than was due him,
and it backfired.

And you are right, all of this information, and much more, can easily be
found on the World Wide Web, or in actual books. Here is a bit of history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_wide_web

Since this is all quite off topic, and since you were picking on a little
irrelevant side joke in a post that had nothing at all to do with this
topic, I shall shut up now and leave you the opportunity to have the last
word. Just think, if it weren't for the Internet, you and I would never
have met to have this conversation. Thanks again, Al!

All the best.

Facebook is a place to find new customers, announce shows and
automatically post new postings from your webpage updates or blogs.
These updates happen automatically so they save time. Facebook
simply announces them to folks with common interests.

You don't have to play games if you don't want too. You have
to add them and I never do. I always refuse requests to include these
add-ons

Stumble Upon is a time saver. It is a way to save links to
webpages you'd like to reference later without cluttering up your
browser bookmarks.

These are simply tools and can be used to save or waste
time. I choose to use them to save time.
