fully blown pottery business

Eh, a business? What full blown pottery business? It's a life style! Mighty
fine life style you got there David.... make hay while the sun shines, clos=
e
out the old year doing year end paper work when the throwing water is too
cold to the hand. Myself included. Sales taxes paid. Cut the firewood to
warm the house till the thaw green comes. A ton of new clay in the door of
the studio. Propane reserve full in the tank, thoughtfully stacked kiln
firing wood drying in the dry cold winter air. Studio floors swept and
mopped. Glaze buckets brimming over. Sketches on the chalk board.
Anticipation. Spring arrives early here in Texas. With the coming of the
Bluebonnets the potters in Texas bloom out too. For everything there is a
season.

HAPPY NEW YEAR POTTERS!

I just came in from 2 1/2 hours of snow blowing. I bought a
snowblower some years ago so that our pottery parking lot looked clean
and accessible. You can either look like you're in business or not.
When we built here our realtor told us you can have A/C in your
showroom and have customers or you can have no A/C and no customers. I
took this to heart and part of being a fully blown pottery is to have
a nicely fully blown driveway. In my time this morning it also
includes doing my 88 year old neighbours. He is so cheap he'd try to
shovel that damn thing.
Oh and if E is reading my post I'd like to point her to how I now list
my spring workshops as the signature of my posts. Cleaver, eh? I
learned this from fellow Business School alumni Chris Campbell. i was
pleased to look at her website and find we went to the same U for
Business Admin.
Well the hot tea has thawed me out so I better make some pots.
I owe, I owe so off to work I go!
Tony

I found out about Tony and Sheila Clennell's
upcoming workshop in South Carolina from this
list--and wrote for more info right away. And
then signed up for it.

The Mud Bucket Pottery website has complete
info about the workshop now, so Tony needs to
update his signature. The URL is:

http://www.mudbucketpottery.com/workshops.html

I've watched Tony's and Sheila's DVDs and am
looking forward to this weekend getaway. Anyone
else going from Clayart?

I guess I'm justa part-timer in the business. When the weather gets
awful, I just close it down and spend a day doing paperwork or
other necessary stuff at the house. Today, I closed out the books
for 2009, and am ready to fill out my Schedule C.
After almost 20 years at this location, I know that there is less than
a 1% chance of a customer showing up if it is storming or raining,
or brutally cold. I can always trek over there if someone shows up.

As we are suffering through the coldest weather in many years,
I can only imagine what things must be like in the frost belt. It
is hovering in the mid-30's in my shop. It would take hours of
burning wood in the stove to bring it up to 70 degrees, and then
a constant fire to maintain it, with a repeat session tomorrow.
It's an old, mostly uninsulated building, and to me, it's not worth all
that work for marginal gain - I had to cut and split all that wood.

Likewise, it's hot in there in July and August. No way would I
spend $200 a month to try to air condition the place. As Tony
well knows, and is fond of saying, the 'experience' of the visit
is one of my main marketing themes - a real potter, doing real
work, with real hands. The heat is part of the experience.

Tony, I hope your investment of 2 1/2 hours for clearing the
driveway nets you a customer or 3.
