wood firing in the spring

Hi all,=3D20
Well Christmas is over for one more year, now on to the next... I just =3D
had to tell you all, I have organized a wood-firing for after mud =3D
season. I haven't fired the wood kiln since fall of 98'. I can't believe =
=3D
I even fired it then. I had just finished chemo for a supposedly =3D
terminal cancer in August, a three week trip to Napal, Tibet, and China =3D
in Sept. and a 4 wk course of IV Ritazin in October (a monoclonal =3D
antibody, just off the market and now supposedly a wonder drug). Or did =3D
I fire it in the spring after a 3 week trip to outside Oaxaca, digging =3D
clay, and making their zapotac pottery in San Marcos. Anyway, I have had =
=3D
a long hiatus from that whirlwind existence and now finally in 2009, I =3D
have a group of new to wood-firing friends who I hope to get as siked up =
=3D
as me to fire a large 2 chamber kiln with the first chamber tumble =3D
stacked with big S14 sculpture clay "things". The second room will be =3D
soda fired and we will use what shelves we have. Probably load tha =3D
chamber first and put whats left over in the first chamber, tumble =3D
stacked. It will be another learning experience for me, as most wood =3D
firings are. We are all getting together at one of the groups studio in =3D
Jan. and will studio hop til time to load. I want us to make a large =3D
group sculpture for a fest' that is next fall. And I want us all to =3D
experiment, experiment, experiment. Try our hands at creating in clay, =3D
something that we like and would like to see fiwhat the flames will do =3D
to. MY good friend Rob Rossel who helped me build the kiln (seen on Bob =3D
Compton's website) and was on a few wood-firing adventures with me, =3D
wants to come. Bob Compton, and Jeff Pentland (a cone 6 wood-firer of =3D
giant garden pots in the Northern England style who lives across the =3D
hills wants to come to). Before we fire, I have to have help taking off =3D
the roof that was built too close to the kiln by I won't say who so the =3D
group can put on some chicken wire and sawdust, clay, portland cement =3D
goop to cover the top. We may use a little propane at first but not =3D
much. We have plenty of stickers and white pine to fire it. The stoke =3D
holes need some work. The last guy I let fire the kiln in my absence =3D
poked the lead chamber's stoke hole out bigger, so we either have to put =
=3D
back the bricks he took out or concoct a small furnace door on the hole. =
=3D
It will all evolve naturally, or so the Buddhist say. Any suggestions, =3D
additions, renditions?
glad tidings,

Hi Melanie,
I am in Hartland, next to Woodstock, Quechee, Windsor, White River =3D
Junction. Quite south of Greensboro. Where the bleep is Mocksville?? I =3D
will keep you posted as things progress. If you want to put something =3D
in, and I will know more about how much room there will be as folks =3D
getting making stuff. There are ten of us that ordered clay from =3D
Sheffield, S14 sculpture clay works good, blushes nice and doesn't turn =3D
all brown due to too much iron. So if you want get 25lbs of S14 and play =
=3D
around with it, make it sturdy with no delicate points if you want to =3D
put it in the first tumble stacked chamber. We are looking for more =3D
silicon carbide shelves if you know of a source of used ones it would be =
=3D
good. I will keep in touch.
Carolyn, with drippy skys and wet icy under foot, not going too far =3D
today!

Dear Carolyn,
I am very interested in partaking in the wood fire in the =3D
spring. I live in Mocksville and I ma not sure where you are but I am =3D
thinking soemwhere around Greensboro. I would not mind pitching in prior =
=3D
to the firing with what ever you might need help with although, I would =
=3D
need some guidenace as I am not a tool person.
I have done one wood firing at Peter's Valley. My work is =3D
mostly carved clay pieces and small quirky sculptures. I have a webssite =
=3D
if that might give you a better idea if my stuff would be ok for the =3D
firing.

Well, please keep me posted.
Thanks
Melanie
