night of the living dead handmade thread

"Night of the Living Dead..." -- your subject heading reminds me of
just how grateful I am that any of us make anything at all, Vince, no
matter how people wish to refer to their creations. Truly those
conjuring up those dark nights of the soul for others are the
living-dead art assassins that lurk among us, striking when least
expected.

My Dear Santa letter might read: "bring us whatever we need so that we
may be wiser than serpents and as harmless as doves and so protect in
ourselves and others that child-like wonder of eternal seasons filled
with creation, joy, light, and innocence".

"Best post of the week. Mel called the issue DEAD a week ago, but apparentl=
y
some of our "more educated" members didn't learn to read in the process. M=
y
suggestion is that they look around for a real life and get on with it. I
don't mind, as Mel say's, "hitting my delete key", but this subject is
getting damn old. It's like a group of little five year olds, each wanting
to get the last word in."

Dear Jeff -
I love Mel. I don't know what this list would be without him. He is the
salt of the earth, a real character, and a wealth of all sorts of
information about things including and far beyond ceramics. He does a grea=
t
job as moderator, but occasionally he misses the mark in "ending" a subject=
.
In this case, I think he was just tired of it, and that is a poor reason to
end a discussion thread. Ultimately, it would be a travesty for him to end
a discussion thread that has to do with art/craft/clay if there are people
on the list who are still engaged in the discussion. To do so is pretty
much counter to the reasons for Clayart's existence. So you and some other=
s
are tired of the subject and think it is dead? So, stop reading it, and le=
t
the discussion continue until IT decides it is over. That's not a problem
as long as you don't get all in a dither about it. Posts that continue a
worthwhile discussion thread that some people are tired of are still
productive posts. Posts that complain about the continuation of particular
discussion thread are not productive posts.

I am sorry that at this time of year, you would choose to post a message
with such a tone. I hope this does not interfere with you having a genuinel=
y
wonderful holiday season. I live a very rich and rewarding life in so many
ways, and productive discussions about worthwhile topics on Clayart are par=
t
of that life. I thank you for USUALLY contributing very positively to
discussions on Clayart.

Best wishes for the holidays Jeff -

Vince,

You know as well as anyone, I don't mind a good debate and I didn't mea=
n
to ring a certain tone in my message. But it seemed like the posts were
moving away from being constructive to just plain old simple bickering. I
do believe that a comment I made in an earlier post about this being a
debate with no winner is true. This is a very opinionated subject and as
far as I know, there is no clear cut, black and white set of rules anywhere=
.
I do not believe that slip casting in any form or fashion is handmade, but =
I
also don't have a problem with slip casting. It's where my ceramic
experience began over 30 years ago. Everything we do in our studio now is
either thrown, thrown and altered or handbuilt, but I still don't use the
"handmade" terminology as it has been cheapened by the likes of Cracker
Barrel and Wal-Mart et al.

Anyway hope you didn't get nailed too bad by the snow down there. I
talked to my old neighbors from Gatlinburg yesterday and apparently there
was some accumilation there.
