A friend has asked me to help out with some research for a book about
=3D93Milk=3D94. She has come across this medieval Chinese painting of a Kha=
n fa=3D
mily
member reclining with a bowl, drinking. She would like to know if this is a
pre-tea nomadic person drinking fermented mare=3D92s milk or is it tea.

Can anyone out there tell, from the bowl form or other art historical info,
what beverage might be in that bowl?

I hope this link will take you to the painting. *The il-Khan Hulagu rests.
From a medieval manuscript in the British Museum. See Morgan, David, The

I couldn't make your link open. But found image on the wiki:

http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkas:Hulagu_1.jpg

The dates are: (1217 =3D96 8 February 1265) So it isn't pre-tea.

I would guess he is drinking chinese tea or Suutei Tsai,
Mongolian salted and milk tea.
