Color is one of the most subjective thing we deal with in art. In =3D
painting we deal with pigments and the way light lets us see "color". =3D
In ceramics we still deal with the transmission of light and the way =3D
chemistry affects color. Color bases in paint are as important to =3D
color as the chemisrty base is to the color of a glaze. Color is about =3D
as easy to understand as the song of a bird, yet we still try to find a =3D
magic glaze, or a secret to the use of color harmonies in our art. =3D
Robert Heni said " art is the trace of a magnificient struggle." Keep =3D
struggling my fellow artists! . =3D20

Joseph Albers was one of the great teachers of color. He came to the US =
=3D
from the Bahaus in the late '30's. He taught color theory at Yale for =3D
many years and influenced many good painters. Chuck Close was one of =3D
his students as was Janet Fish. Albers and his students produced a book =3D
that had 220 or so original silk screen plates that was directly related =
=3D
to color theory. HThe plates showed after image, etc and dealt with =3D
color under light and color in pigments and in light. This is no longer =
=3D
available in the large format, but one might be found, but it will cost =
=3D
at least $4,ooo. All of these books I own or I wouldn' recommend them. =
=3D
The Albers collection was $300 in '65. The companion book is available =3D
at a reasonable cost, but doesn't have all the silk screened plates. =3D
The Itten (large one) costs about $90. It is a very good book on color. =
=3D
The History of Color in Painting by Faber Birren is a book anyone =3D
interested in color should own, about $80. Van Gogh studied color =3D
theory from a book on color by Eugene Chevreul. This book is available =3D
and was translated into English, and is both artstic and scientific. =3D20
