Mel: I don't understand when people keep doing the same thing and get
bad pots but I must confess to doing the same thing over and over
because I got some good pots. It's like the hockey player that got a
hat trick and wants to recreate the magic and therefore wears the same
underwear or has the same thing for dinner every game night. I came up
with a substantial list of do's and don'ts for firing carbon trap
shino. I am doing this colour testing and discovered that the heavy
reduction at Cone 012 was not doing me any favours in the colour dept.
So I decided to have a firing with a reduction starting at 08 medium
reduction firing for some dry ash pots I'm doing. We ran out of pots
and said oh what the hell lets put in these 5 carbon trap shino bowls
and some of our Christmas ornaments in a copper red glaze. I was also
convinced that copper red needed to start at 012 in spite of what I've
read here about the red occurring on the way down.
Well, the kiln was at Cone 10 2-1/2 hours before normal schedule and
on opening I had great carbon trap and beautiful copper red.
Soooooooooo! I think I'm going to change the underwear that I've been
wearing for some 200 or more firings.
We that have 3 or $4000 worth of pots in a firing get a bit edgy about
changing what could very well be a bank deposit.
We get too late smart and too soon old.
Boo!
