Thanks so much for the responses I got....I have a few comments I need to
make regarding this and then will see where it takes us..=3D0D
=3D0D
First, Chris...thanks so very much about confirming the wheel to wheel wa=
=3D
y
of teaching.....I think at this stage of the game, that will have to be t=
=3D
he
way I go especially since classes start Nov 4...not near enough time to =
=3D
go
thru 250 lbs of clay trying to teach myself how to pull up, cone in, bel=
=3D
ly
out, keep walls even, and of course making a bowl that looks like a bowl.=
=3D
=3D2E..
=3D0D
=3D0D
My hands have a mind of their own, and while others say changing from lef=
=3D
t
to right throwing can be done, I have a test for the ladies to try (don't
worry, the guys get one too.....I did this myself, (never ask someone to =
=3D
do
what you yourself wont do is a good thing)....if you are right handed, tr=

to put on ALL OF YOUR MAKEUP, EYE MAKEUP TOO, LIPSTICK TOO with your lef=
=3D
t
hand...then do your hair left handed, hair dryer in left hand, brush in
right hand, flat iron in left hand, comb in right hand....now, be honest =
=3D
if
you take on this challenge, and if you do great, that is super, u are tru=
=3D
ly
ambidextrius (or however u spell it)....of course if you are left handed=
=3D
,
do the opposite of the above exercisce...if u did not do so well, tell wh=
=3D
at
was the hardest thing to do....and why u think it was hard...PLEASE BE
HONEST FOR THIS TO MAKE SENSE...=3D0D
Ok, now the guys, if you are right handed, SHAVE WITH YOUR LEFT HAND, fix
your hair with your left hand, do whatever u usually do dominately right
handed do it left....I mean everything..since I am not male, I cant give =
=3D
u a
list, u have to have your own...=3D0D
Anyway, post your results...=3D0D
For some of you, this is a stupid thing to do, UNTIL U TRY TO DO IT.....I
have asked several of my friends to do this, and they were actually stunn=
=3D
ed.
=3D2E.=3D0D
While writing backwards, if I may use that word, is difficult, doing all =
=3D
of
your everyday routine backward, is almost impossible....=3D0D
Therefore, my comment is this....DO WHAT IS COMFORTABLE TO YOU AND WHAT
GIVES U THE BEST RESULTS.....don't force yourself into something just
because the world does not turn the same way u do.=3D0D
=3D0D
As for having to teach counterclockwise because the students wont have t=
=3D
he
selection of wheels out there that go that way, that is not true...I know
this from much experience..while there are a few companies that do only s=
=3D
ell
counterclockwise wheels, most companies have either a switch to flip, or =
=3D
a
plug to rotate...others offer a choice of CCW or CW, the Giffin Grip tell=
=3D
s u
to order one or the other, and if u use one, u will quickly see why it ca=
=3D
n't
be both ways and why u cant flip a switch....but that particular tool is =
=3D
the
only one I know of that is that way...=3D0D
=3D0D
Wheel manufacturers know that their are CC throwers and CCW throwers, and
while they may not advertise CW on their site, they will be most happy to
get u one, if a choice has to be made.=3D0D
=3D0D
Teaching has to be a 2 way street, and while potters are I agree, mostly
right handed, I think that if beginners, those who have never touched cla=
=3D
y
before, are given a choice, they would probably say, let me try it both w=
=3D
ays
and I will see what is most comfortable to me....The fact that a right
handed teacher automatically teaches newbies CCW just doesn't make sense =
=3D
to
me, only because of my situation probably. Teaching a student to throw c=
=3D
lay
isnt the same as teaching them history, or math or economics....it is a
personal experience...they (the student) are the one that will either lov=
=3D
e
what he is being taught because he feels comfortable,or he will hate it
because something is not quite right, but he cant figure out what...how m=
=3D
any
teachers do suggest changing the wheel direction...? Is there a Golden R=
=3D
ule
for Teachers that says somewhere thou shalt not throw backwards because =
=3D
I
don't throw backwards? Do teachers only teach the way they know how to d=
=3D
o
something? Or do they teach the way I want to teach, with choices and th=

e=3D20
permission" if you will, for the student to try it their way....as long a=
=3D
s
the basics are taught, the rest should be student friendly....=3D0D
=3D0D
I think I have solved my own dilemma, with Chris's help, and some advice
from others here as well...my classes will be taught student friendly, th=
=3D
ey
will throw the way they are comfortable throwing, (as long as they get th=
=3D
e
basics down), and hopefully they will continue to keep clay in their live=
=3D
s..

=3D0D
Please, those of you who are game, and even if you are not, take my test
challenge....see if it changes your mind about anything I talked about, o=

reinforced your way of thinking...I am truly interested. I am the type o=
=3D
f
person that NEEDS to know the whys and hows of things....I am very very
curious to see not only if you can do it, but if you are comfortable doin=
=3D

it, or if it is just too much and u give up.....=3D0D

LOL!

Guess I'm the lucky one - started life pretty much ambi-dextrous (did I
spell that right?) but had an early teacher advise me to choose a hand to
write with. She said it would be better to concentrate on teaching only
one hand!

Worked good, but I still do many things either leftish or with both hands.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

When I was learning to throw, There was a bi-directional old Shimpo
wheel. I was not aware of this. I picked it because it was lower
than the Brent wheels. Some days a left hander who also like the
wheel would leave it set the way she liked it. So me being the
Dyslexic, ambidextrous person that I am was blissfully working which
ever way the wheel was going. it didn't seem to matter. Eventually
the teacher noticed and had me pick right handed as the way to
throw. But there are a lot of things that I do with which ever hand
is more convenient. it has paid off in the long run. I have one
right handed child and one left handed

This is true of most new wheels, but for a
student seeking an inexpensive second-hand
wheel, or renting space in an under-resourced
art studio, the choices are more limited, so I'd
rather keep it standard.

However, I never said you shouldn't keep
throwing CW if that's the only way that works well
for you. In fact, many students mirror the teacher
rather than doing the mental rotation necessary
to keep the same orientation. When I sit opposite
such a student, I often demonstrate hand positions
in mirror image because some students have real
problems transposing the posture 180 degrees.
I merely think that the _students_ should be
encouraged to throw CCW, and I tell them why.
They can learn CW if they like, but with the
knowledge of why I recommend the opposite.
