what cone did i actually reach?

Hello:

Genius here.

In my haste to get a bisque load of stoneware and porcelain going I
inadvertently programmed the controller on my electric kiln to fire to co=

ne
04 then HOLD for 2.5 hours. I intended to PREHEAT for 2.5 hours, then fi=

to cone 04. Can anyone offer an educated guess what cone I actually
reached? What, if any adjustments should I make in glazing?

Many thanks,

Fred Parker

Fred...

I'd estimate that your 2 1/2 hour soak raised your firing only a cone or so
higher, two at the most, and that with stoneware and porcelain clay it will
make no difference at all in regard to glazing or anything else. If you di=
p
your pots, maybe hold a second longer than usual. If you spray, no
difference. Why not just dip a piece, then see if the glaze coat is to you=
r
liking?

I'll bet you the folks at Orton could tell you for certain, if you really
cared, but you are in any case likely "close enough for hand grenades".

Simple ideas here. Check porosity by putting tongue on bisqued piece. If yo=

a bit high --if you spray you might have to heat surface with a paint-stri=

Orton has a cone estimating program. You put in the temp reached, rise pe=

hour and you get an estimate of the cone reached,
