We will continue and hopefully finish construction of our new 50 cu ft
catenary arch kiln this weekend. Inside hard fire brick with outside
a layer of soft brick , then 1" of wool, chicken wire and castable
covering. I plan to build a small fire in the firebox and keep it
burning for several days to help dry out the kiln. Does anyone have
any suggestions for glazes, flashing slips to try out when we fire the
kiln? Pictures of the process so far are posted at r.com

Linda - I'm especially enjoying your updates as I'm in the midst of buildin=
g
my own catenary arch wood kiln. And I have to hurry to get it done here in
MN, with freezing weather in a few days. I'll be keeping a fire going in
it, or perhaps using a heater, to keep the mortar from freezing before it
sets.

What are you using for grates? I am not wild about what I have.

Sorry folks I hit send before I was done...=3D0A=3D0A... With a bunch of ca=
ns o=3D
f charcoal you won't need to keep stoking to pre-heat the kiln and you end =
=3D
up with a coal bed that will light your fuel for you. Leave the damper open=
=3D
too. Looking at your photos I don't see a whole lot of lag and your hard b=
=3D
rick doesn't seem to have picked up environmental moisture (got rained on) =
=3D
over time so you should be able to load and start firing, it will just take=
=3D
a while longer than you anticipate to dry the kiln and the castable coatin=
=3D
g will probably air cure because you already have excellent insulation so I=
=3D
doubt heat will get to the skin. =3D0A=3D0A Good luck, take your time so y=
