updated tue 6 oct 09

Have you paid to have your work showcased? If so, in what category was
your work showcased and what were your results?

Many thanks.

Yes, I signed up for the Ceramics and Pottery showcase for this Saturday, O=
ctober 3, so I don't know the results yet. I have had pots on etsy for abou=
t 2 weeks now. A couple of days ago, I joined the etsy mud team. I now have=
business cards as well that I am handing out to one and all.

Haven't sold anything yet.

I have not tried showcases. I don't even relist on a regular basis, but
I hustle on the street. However, I am in Brooklyn / Manhattan and I get to
meet a lot of stylists and editors and there are a lot of press
opportunities just being in New York City. For my type of work (home fashio=
n
and wedding gifts) , I do well being part of PoppyTalk. (paid store front)
I do very well when "style-makers" talk about my work, but I can't pay for
that. It's a bit of luck, in my case.

P.S. etsy has been steady for me, it pays for all my firing this year.
*Work on your photo shoots, darlings!
** Mud team is alright, don't count on it, but more importantly, join a
local street team.

Hi=3D2C Deb=3D2C

I just tried the showcase yesterday=3D2C Oct 1. I found a considerable upti=
ck=3D
in views=3D2C but sold nothing:-( and I only gained 2 new fans. It's too e=
ar=3D
ly to tell yet if anyone will come back later and buy from having viewed my=
=3D
work yesterday during my showcase. I did not feel like it was very success=
=3D
ful=3D2C but (stubborn-me) I will try again one or two more times hoping th=
at=3D
with persistance and consistency=3D2C people will come to know me and enjo=
y =3D
buying from me.

=3D20

I love my pottery and love making it=3D2C but I am having a rough time figu=
ri=3D
ng out how to sell it. I live in a very poor=3D2C rural=3D2C military (peop=
le m=3D
ove a lot) community. No big-city big-wigs around here. I'm not ready to do=
=3D
traveling art shows due to a variety of practical reasons and there aren't=
=3D
any decent shows locally (although I will be setting up at the small one o=
=3D
n post next month). I have tried galleries=3D2C but have difficulty with th=
e =3D
fees. (As a handbuilder=3D2C I find pricing hard to justify my time and exp=
en=3D
se at a price that people are willing to pay. Forty percent of an already t=
=3D
oo-low price is too painful.) So=3D2C I'm trying the internet at Etsy. But =
I'=3D
m not having a lot of success there either:-( Is it my work? Is it the mark=
=3D
et? Is it simply a sign of the times? Do I need to be both more patient and=
=3D
persistent? I don't know. Suggestions?

=3D20

I could ramble on...I'm good at rambling=3D2C but I have already shared reg=
ar=3D
ding the question asked. I hope it gives at least a little assistance. Good=
=3D
luck!

Jarita,
My thought is you need to find out what folks like in your neighborhood?
You need to than fill that nitch if you want to sell. I live in a small
town outside of Colorado Springs ( which has a military base) and Denver. =
I
sell well at the local farmer's market. I looked for a "nitch" and began
selling what folks were looking for. I follow the flow so to speak: when
peaches are in season, I sell pie plates,etc. When Berries are good I sell
berry bowls, in The fall, bakers and garlic jars,etc. Mugs seem to do well
all summer, but in the tourist months I make some with CASTLE ROCK, or
COLORADO on them. Chilly bowls in fall and soup bowls,etc.
Around the holidays, casserole dishes,etc. I always bring a special item t=
o
each show, something I enjoyed making, fun, and I don't have more than one
of them. Like a punch bowl set with cups, or square jars, or soup tureen
with bowls,etc.
Find your "nitch" and it will happen for you. Maybe a church craft
fair,open your studio to sell, Get something going on the BASE, make
something military to remember folks bye? Things like WELCOME HOME, miss yo=
u
much,etc.
I think once you find a "nitch" selling will become easier IMO.

Hi=3D2C Mary=3D2C

Thank you for your thoughts and concern. It is truly appreciated. I continu=
=3D
ously evaluate my work=3D2C considering its quality and direction so that I=
m=3D
ay always strive to do my best. I will think upon your suggestions=3D2C alt=
ho=3D
ugh it may simply add to my dilemna.

=3D20

There have been previous discussions on this Clayart forum regarding making=
=3D
pottery that suits a fashion or a particular demand versus creating work f=
=3D
rom your own passions. Since there are so many different situations=3D2C th=
e =3D
opinions varied. I know that if I created work that suited someone else but=
=3D
was disagreeable to me=3D2C then it would become like a chore. I would hat=
e =3D
it and would lose my reason for working in clay to begin with. After all=3D=
2C=3D
I could work for Wal-Mart=3D2C hate it=3D2C and still make money. Money is=
not=3D
everything. On the other hand=3D2C creating pottery that only I like is fu=
n=3D
=3D2C but wasteful and ultimately discouraging. I believe that almost all i=
ss=3D
ues in life including pottery must exist on a certain level of compromise a=
=3D
nd happy-mediums. Sometimes=3D2C I struggle to find that point in each situ=
at=3D
ion.=3D20

=3D20

Overall=3D2C I hope that others besides just me find my pottery pleasing. I=
w=3D
ould like it very much if at least a little of my pottery would sell and be=
=3D
appreciated for many years in someone's home and life. In the meantime=3D2=
C =3D
I will continue to evaluate my work for quality and direction. I will learn=
=3D
=3D2C improve=3D2C experiment=3D2C learn some more=3D2C and overall enjoy p=
laying i=3D
n clay!

=3D20

Sincerely=3D2C

Jarita,

I think you have to market outside of Etsy. Etsy is so
big, it is difficult to window shop there. I don't have stuff up,
but I sold most of my work there to folks who have bought from be
before, either on Ebay or from my own web sales. Etsy just makes the
shopping cart and taking moneythrough Paypal easy.

Put your Etsy address on your business card. Have it on
your fliers that are available at fairs, shops and galleries, where
you sell your work.
